Re: HS Teachers
I've noticed this on the elementary level how they dont learn script.
Last year when I taught 5th grade in a CTT class I would write on the board in script...some kids moaned about it, but I wouldnt let up I told them you learned it so there are no excuses. only one child who was low functioning really complained but i took the time to read it to her and even started teaching her some script on the side. When I would cover the 4th grade in the school they loved when I wrote in script. This was a NYC school.
Now in my class room in my private school, Handwriting is a grade on the report card. So I teach them script even though more than half the class already knows it and begs me to let them do homework and classwork in script, i tell them not until we get through all the letters etc.
Funny thing is since they are so eager to learn I told them that in may/june I will teach them calligraphy, which I mastered in 8th grade as a class in a NYC public school.
Im a huge handwriting junkie, when I was bored in school or work or anything even til this day I practice my handwriting, I told this to a guy on a first date with proof and he was shocked.
sry for my rambling but I do think its important

Re: HS Teachers
Nope....I am happy if they hand SOMETHING in lol They can write in hieroglyphics if it means doing their work! lol
I think that the NYS curriculum has changed so much over the years and that from a very early age these kids are prepped for state tests and the important things like spelling and handwriting are put on the back burner. I am sure that Elementary school teachers have complaints, as do us HS teachers, about the demands of state tests. It's ashame that memorization and cramming in information has almost completely replaced creativity! I try my hardest to keep this alive in my classroom, while keeping up with the stupid testing garbage.

Re: HS Teachers
I don't even think it's just handwriting- I don't think my students have ever had real instruction in spelling, or grammar. Our curriculum doesn't address it at all either- I bought a few books on my own to teach my kids. Though I am in the city, so I know there is a difference.
