No tub in master bath?
We will eventually be renovating the master bedroom and bath in our new house.
DH wants to put a nice shower in there - multiple jets, a bench, beautifully tiled, etc. and just eliminate the tub. His reasoning is because we hardly take baths anyway and we will have a tub in the other bathroom for the kids. The space gained from not having a tub will give us more space for the walk-in closet.
I would love to do it his way but I think it would be better for resale if we have the tub in the master bath. (I'm talking modest sized soaking tub, not a behemoth jacuzzi.)
What do you think? Could you live without a tub in the master suite?

We opted for steam shower big enough for two with heated bench over saving space for tub we'd never use.
I think had we made room for tub the bath would look cramped versus now where it is more spa like

Re: No tub in master bath?
We have a small master bath, and it came with just a shower. We renovated it and replaced with shower again. We have a jacuzzi tub in the other bathroom. There really was no room to add a tub, so we didn't... it doesn't seem to be problem at this time (no potential buyers have mentioned this as a problem for them).

Re: No tub in master bath?
I'd much rather a nice big shower than a tub, I never use a tub either. Not sure how it would affect resale, but i'd love it!

Re: No tub in master bath?
i think that just a nice shower would be fine.. make it big enough for 2 and make it look "spa like"- i think that will be good for resale i think a lot of times the jaccuzzi tubs are more for show anyway- by the time you fill them up, you forget that you wanted a bath lol as long as you have a tub somewhere in the house for bathing young kids, thats good.

If you can make it a big shower, I think you should be okay. I would check with some real estate experts though to find out if it will affect your resale value.

Re: No tub in master bath?
That's what my house has - big, beautiful shower in the master bath, but no tub. I love it and don't miss having a tub in there at all, but I do wonder about resale sometimes, because I think buyers expect the master bathroom to have a nice tub. There's one in the second bathroom, in case anyone really wants to take a bath though.
I guess ask yourself how long you plan to stay in your house, and what's more important in the meantime, making the house buyer-friendly for if/when you plan to sell, or having a nice shower that you will enjoy every day.

Re: No tub in master bath?
Our master bath is tiny - a shower (although it's a big space and could fit a tub) and a pedestal sink and toilet. That's the way it was when we bought, so we updated it and left it as is, and we have another bathroom with a tub (as well as a third bathroom with another shower stall downstairs).

You will be fine as long as there is at least one tub in your home. It doesnt have to be in the master bath.
I think an extra large shower would be great

Re: No tub in master bath?
We have a medium sized master bathroom & we only have a shower. When we redo it, I will not put a tub in since we have one in the main bath. I only take baths when my back is bothering me, so it is wasted space. I would much rather have a big shower

Re: No tub in master bath?

Resale resale resale... If ever you plan on selling down the road it will only hurt your sale....

Re: No tub in master bath?
I could live without the tub. We never use ours. I'd much rather prefer a larger shower but, for some reason when we were looking, every house we saw w/o the tub we scratched.

Re: No tub in master bath?
the master in the house I grew up didn't have a tub
there was a tub in the kids bath down the hall
I think the rule for resale is 1 tub in the house...

Re: No tub in master bath?
I don't think it will hurt your sale at all. As long as you have one tub in the house. We just redid our master bath and we have a stand up shower. Our last place had the tub and we never used it plus it was a PITA to keep clean. We have a tub in our main bathroom next door.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Since the house has a full-sized bathroom in it with a tub, I don't think you need to have one in the master bath nor do I think it would affect your resale value.
If you were giving up a tub altogether, that, IMO, would be a different story.

Re: No tub in master bath?
I seem to be in the minority here but I'd put in the tub. Any house that we saw where the Master Bath was beat up or didn't have a tub, we passed on. Just my opinion.
