DIY Vinyl Siding
We are doing our siding this summer.
Last year we got a few quotes and they were insane. DH is a teacher and we are thinking he might do it himself instead of working this summer.
If you did your own siding, how much did you save compared to hiring someone? Where did you buy your materials?
Thanks!

Re: DIY Vinyl Siding
I didn't DIY my new siding, but I do know there are a lot of little tips and tricks. Make sure you do the research about installation before hand. The nails can't get pounded in flush (the siding hangs, it isn't nailed on), there needs to be room for everything to stretch and shrink from the weather, etc, etc.

Re: DIY Vinyl Siding
DH is incredibly handy. He will research for months before actually doing it, i just want to see if its worth his while.
If he works in the summer and his $$ goes right to having someone else insall it, he would rather NOT work and do the siding himself, KWIM?

Re: DIY Vinyl Siding
I changed the siding on our house last year. It does take time doing it by yourself (a few weekends) but it saved us a bit of money. I paid about 3,500 for all of the materials (Certainteed Monogram - Allied Building Materials). When we priced the job all of the quotes were over 10k.

Thanks- That is what we were thinking (we roughly priced at HD).
We got quotes from $10K-$17K, we were thinking he can do it for less than $5K himself and have the entire summer off.

Hi, you know it cant hurt to get estimates now, those were last year quotes, im sure these days you can get a reasonable estimate. my neighbors house is huge 2 levels and all sided 4 sides with soffets, shutters, gutters and she didnt pay even close to your quotes. let me know if you need a contractor, I can give you the name of who she used.

Re: DIY Vinyl Siding
I also factor in how much I earn per hour, and figure out if I come out ahead by working at a job and paying a professional to get it done quickly, as opposed to me doing it myself (and taking much longer, and potentially doing it wrong). You've also got to rent/make some sort of scaffolding, which adds to the cost, unless you do it all with ladders, which makes it harder.
Is your house 1 or 2 stories?

Re: DIY Vinyl Siding
I have a high ranch, so 1 and a half stories I have a deck across the entire back, so he would only need scaffolding for the front and two sides. Not a concerm to us.
