MOnth old how much should he be eating?

I feel like we waste so much RTF formula. Some days he is eating all 4 1/2 oz dry and so next day increase to 5 and then he only eats 3 oz. I cant figure it out. Ped. Said to feed him on demand during day that way he is full and and will sleep through nite. well he is pretty much on a every 4 hour schedule. Thanks in advance.

DS will be one month tomorrow and it really varies what he eats...sometimes he will barely get 3 oz. down, other times he will even eat as much as 6 oz. He will sleep between 3 to 4 hours a stretch (sometimes less Chat Icon ). We have been feeding on demand too...but I really think it might be time to set up a schedule.

I hear you about wasting formula, especially since it's so expensive.

well, we used powder, not RTF... but we made 2 oz at a shot, and replaced the bottle with a clean one every few hours... that way, at most you're refrigerating an ounce or so....

I heard that when they consistently eat the same ounces at every feeding, up the feeding by a 1/2 oz.

We give Jake (8 weeks) the same amount at every feeding - he is up to 5oz every 3-4 hours, but at night he goes longer. I'm getting ready to up his intake another 1/2 oz since the 3-4 hour window is leaning more toward 3 hours than 4 lately. He has ALWAYS finished whatever we give him. Tomorrow is his 2 mo well visit, so I'll ask the ped this question then.

Re: MOnth old how much should he be eating?

Hey date twin...

Caleb is both BF and on formula, so I've had a really hard time judging this too! There are times when he's completely satisfied from just BF'ing, but then other times he needs to be supplemented after eating.

When he's eating just formula, he can take anywhere from 3 oz - 6 oz! Chat Icon I couldn't believe my eyes when he took 6 oz for the first time the other day.

What I've been doing so that I don't waste any formula is making just 3 oz at a time....if he wants more, I just make more after he finishes the initial amount. That seems to work best....that way I'm not throwing anything out.

He has his one month check-up this week, so I'll let you know what the ped has to say about it. I think as long as they're satisfied and gaining weight, it doesn't matter that much. I was told not to feed over 32-34oz/day, and he's way below that, so I'm not too worried.
