Budget cuts and job security
Hey, are there anyone out there worried about their jobs for next year. Alot of my friends are worried and I am in the city. However, I was worried because I am out of the classroom but thankfully I have advantage over the other counselors because I've been there the longest and I just got tenured. Even that been said we don't know what the future will hold!!!

Re: Budget cuts and job security
no I feel that my job is not secure... I work for NYC, am not tenured (because even w/ 4 yrs of service I was excessed once before & they made me start my probation over again when I returned). Also, my school is shrinking in enrollment & I'm the last one hired in my dept, so with the numbers going down & my school losing $1 million due to budget cuts, if anyone's going to lose their job, it's me.

Ditto! I am in the same exact position as you in my school. I am figuring I will be excessed for sure, but I am worried about finding a new position. I don't want to be an ATR!

Re: Budget cuts and job security
It's all speculation, but there are rumors about a buyout for city teachers who are close to retirement. I will be surprised if it does not happen. Older teachers are much more expensive and Klein has made no secret of his disdain for older teachers. They are still recruiting TFA teachers and running ads to hire teachers, so I really think they will offer something to the teachers who are at the top of the pay scale.

Re: Budget cuts and job security
I am going to say "maybe". They put up our seniority list and I am 10th from the bottom (I think) even though I have been there for almost 3 years and have another year and a half from another NYC school.
I am hoping that last thing they want to do is get rid of teachers...but who knows. I think they need to STOP hiring if the budget is that bad.

Yes and no. I'm the only GC in my school, so I AM the seniority list for my "dept." And I've been in the city for four years. But who knows? Everyone's scared.

This year? Yes. In the future, I hope so, but enrollment is apparently going down.

I feel secure. Administrators are already talking about my placement for next year.

Re: Budget cuts and job security
yes...i am tenured and a self-contained sp. ed. teacher... no one wants my job! seriously though, my district has no plans to cut teaching positions at this point and are making cuts in other areas. we do havea several people losing their job, but they are all leave replacements as many teachers that were out on leave are coming back.
