NYC making budget cuts - Will NYPD academy be affected?
Has anyone else read this? DH heard that they are going to push the Jan class back to July, and delay all future classes. He is super depressed. Anyone else have any info on this?

I'm sorry to say its definite...this is direct from NYC.GOV--the press release of Bloomberg's plan:
Reducing peak headcount at the New York City Police Department by 1,000. Two police academy classes were planned for 2009. The peak headcount reduction will be achieved by canceling the January 2009 academy class. The July 2009 police academy class will add 2,000 new officers to the force as will subsequent classes.

NOW that they raise the salary and have MORE people applying - they make cuts? Yeah that makes a lot of sense. OMG!! That is HORRIBLE

as a New York city resident- I don't think it's that bad
I would rather to keep NYC from going bankrupt and I trust Bloomberg to do so

Re: NYC making budget cuts - Will NYPD academy be affected?
But I heard from a cop friend that there are a record number of officers retiring this year and that if they don't get the next few classes out ASAP they will be grossly understaffed - more so than usual. That seems like a concern to me, but I don't live in NYC so maybe not.

Re: NYC making budget cuts - Will NYPD academy be affected?
I wonder of that July class will be only the people who were slated to be in the Jan class, or if they're going to merge the Jan class and the would-be July class?

Actually, IMO it does make sense. My cousin is in the Academy now and said they increased the starting salary significantly and are seriously raising their standards for applicants and new cadets ....

Re: NYC making budget cuts - Will NYPD academy be affected?
This is ridiculous. My brother is an officer and bc of lack of staff he works about 30 hours of overtime a week! I can not believe that they are going to cut a class when officers are needed in the city. Each year too many officers retire so who will replace them? This is going to affect our safety and the safety of the officers on the street as they will be working longer hours and will be tired on the job. Yeah Bloomy- great way to want to get re-elected for a third term.

Your DH should speak with his Investigator and see what they say and if he will be entering the July class. I'm sorry for this setback for you guys--I know you were preparing for him to enter the January class.

July we could deal with. But next Jan would be very upsetting for DH

Why should it surprise you?
My DH is FDNY EMS and they have mandatory OT because they are understaffed and he is regularly re-deployed to Manhattan b/c they are so understaffed.
But....at the same time, i believe Bloomberg IS trying to do the right thing for the city, as does my husband. He has his reasons and he is trying to keep this city afloat.

He hasn't gone through the process yet - he only just got his list #. So I don't think he has an investigator yet?

Re: NYC making budget cuts - Will NYPD academy be affected?
My dh is FDNY and I worry about them cutting costs on equipment and training. I know cuts have to be made somewhere, but a lot of firefighters over the past few years have been endangered/lost because they city doesn't give them the necessary funds.
I also had 2 friends who were supposed to go in to the Jan NYPD class. Sad that it isn't going to happen.

It's surprising because I am a firm believer of safety first. I dont think that someone should be on a job when they may be too tired to have the proper reflexes to respond in case of an emergency. These men and women deal with dangerous situations that most of us would run away from, yet they are on the forefront. Having "mandatory overtime" is not the way to do it in my opinion. Also the amount of money that is spent on overtime can be the salary of the recruits.
I do agree that the selection process for the NYPD should be stricter and the academy longer to better prepare the rookies but maybe cutting this class in half would have been a better option IMO then cancelling it.
