scared- question about ectopics
TMI warning here.
I had a d&C last week. The dr. called me today to tell me that he got the pathology reports in.....and there was "no pregnancy material." How is that possible? He explained that when he did the procedure, and this means one of 2 things: 1- the sample was simply too small and is inconclusive 2- it could be ectopic, and the only way to know this is by testing my blood levels to see if the HCG is dropping.
I am travelling in FL right now, back tomorrow night. There is no way I can get my blood tested tomorrow. I went to walgreens and bought HPT...just took it. Negative. I called the dr. and told him. He said he guesses that the sample was just too small, but must test the blood as soon as I get back just to rule out ectopic. My question is......if it were ectopic, wouldn't I have symptoms of something? I have no pain, minimal bleeding. I know how serious ectopics can be so i'm worried. He said the fact that the HPT is negative is a good sign, but to come in on Thursday morning when I get back. My question is has anyone on here had an ectopic? What were the symptoms?.

Re: scared- question about ectopics
Oh, this is just what you need right now!
I never had one, but my 2nd time, I was just over 6 weeks and there was barely a sac in my uterus....my # kept rising so they were mentioning ectopic, but it turned out that the pregnancy had just never developed....this could very well be the case for you- there just may not have been much in there in the first place.
Also, did you have any bleeding before your d&c? It also could be that some came out on it's own.
Symptoms I was told to watch for were abdominal pain and nausea.
The fact that you took a negative hpt is a really great sign- was it a sensative test? If it was like a frer or something, I would feel very comforted if I were you b/c it picks up such small amounts of HCG.
Hope you are doing okay.

Re: scared- question about ectopics
I have nothing to add about ectopics but just wanted to give you some hugs - This is just what you need right now, right?
Hang in there - I'm sure everything will be fine.

My question is has anyone on here had an ectopic? What were the symptoms?.
I had a heterotopic pregnancy...two fertilized eggs...one implanted in the uterus and one in the fallopian tube (ectopic). I lost both but can tell you what I learned since we focused more on the ectopic as it was the most concerning for my doctors and I. Although my situation was different and it's impossible to separate the two implantation scenarios I can tell you that I had bad cramping and that night started to bleed. We don't know which or if both caused the bleeding but it was believed to be the start of a miscarriage.
My doctor told me that we were luck to have clearly seen that two eggs were released so that the technician knew to at least search for where they implanted...otherwise we would not have see the one in the tube. She said that many women don't even know they had an ectopic because the body miscarries early on and it is sometimes considered a late period and sometimes the tests say negative...mine most likesly said positive the entire time because of the two.
You definitely want your doctor to do a through examination - whatever that might be - and keep any eye on your levels. Ectopics are very serious and need to be monitored.
