When is it ok/not ok to use bumpers?
I registered for bedding that comes with bumpers and registered for the breathable bumpers.
Is it ok to ever use bumpers? Is there a certain age to start using them?
Thanks

I'm going to use my bumpers till DS cal actually move or roll... then I think it becomes a hazard! At first DS will not be able to roll so I'm going to keep in till then and then I will switch to breatable!

I plan on using bumpers the whole time. Our parents and grandparents all used bumpers in the cribs...

I never used them. We only used breathable bumpers. You never know exactly when DC will be able to roll over until after they do..... If it potentially is a hazard, I'm not playing Russian Roulette....
After they are passed the suffocation hazard stage, then they can use them as a step to climb out of the crib and fall on the floor easier.

We are only using the breathable ones. I just don't want to take a chance. Babies have been known to roll over very young.

I never thought about them using it as a step....

Re: When is it ok/not ok to use bumpers?
I pretty much always used the breathable bumpers. Right from the beginning even though DD could not roll over etc. she would shimmy herself so that her face was up against the bumper or pnp. She liked to sleep with her face pressed ip against something.

Re: When is it ok/not ok to use bumpers?
my "plan" was to use bumpers with #1 and then reassess when he started moving. well, he started moving and i saw no reason to stop using them. he has never slept right up against them and they have broken his fall a few times where he would have hit his head against the wood.
i will use them with #2 without hesitation

Re: When is it ok/not ok to use bumpers?
Breathable bumpers are ok. Regular, particularly puffy bumpers, are not. They are a suffocation hazard. You just never know when, on some random night, your little baby will roll over to its side, get its face stuck up against a crib bumper and not be able to roll back.
My daughter started rolling to her side when she was VERY young, way before she was capable of moving herself back. You just never know, and there are way too many newbie deaths by suffocation, by accident, to take that risk, at least for me.

I am using breathable bumpers. Why take the chance ? I know our parents ect used them, but they also drank and smoked while pregnant too ( well some did ) and we know thats not good for anyone let alone a baby.

Re: When is it ok/not ok to use bumpers?
I'm not planning on using bumpers at all. If we have an issue where we feel like we need them then we will use the breathable ones. For me the risk of using them is not worth the benefit that they provide.

Re: When is it ok/not ok to use bumpers?
I understand the worry about bumpers suffocating the child so I don't think I'd use one. but what is the point of the breathable ones? It seems like if they are that thin that the child won't suffocate on them, they wouldn't offer much protection for bumping the head either? Or am I picturing them wrong?

I think one of the concerns that the breathable bumpers address is that the baby may stick his/her leg through the slats and get stuck.

Yes, it happens on occasion - Alex did this once in a while. It's harmless, but she did wake up a few times crying because her leg was stuck between the slats.

It keeps limbs and pacifiers in the crib (trust me, at some point, many of you will be very happy to be able to keep pacis in the crib.... )
I was brought home from the hospital in my mom's lap in the front seat of the car, so I never go by "Well, my mom did it that way...." Many DC HAVE died from suffocating in their crib. They just aren't around to say "Well, *I* survived, so it must be OK...."
DC don't hit their heads hard enough on the crib to cause any damage or concern. Hey, MY mom never used them.....

I agree. We used them for DD for the first month but I ripped them out because I was too nervous after reading up on them and finding out that the AAP recommends against them.
We have used the breathable bumpers since then and we'll use those with DC #2.
