Tutoring

Good Morning!

I was wondering if any of you tutor, and if so you wouldn't mind saying how much you charge? I am thinking of doing this and was thinking of charging in the $50-$60 range but then someone said they charge up to $100!

Also, if you tutor, do you go to the house or meet at the library? What do you have the kids call you? (Mr. or Ms ____ or by your first name?)

TIA

Re: Tutoring

I charge low. $40/hr. Partially is b/c that is what my first job was and I keep getting friends of that child, so I couldn't raise it and then have the parents start talking.

I go to their house which stinks b/c instead of an hour, it becomes almost 2 hours by the time I get back home.

They call me whatever, I don't care. They don't go to my school, so I have no qualms about being called by my first name.

It's great Christmas money, though! Chat Icon

The answer depends on a few factors:

1st- what subject/age level are you tutoring? I teach HS math and also tutor for the SAT's, so yes, getting up to $100/hour is not unheard of. The amount you charge can vary depending on how much prep work you must do.

2nd- where are you going to do the tutoring? Some areas pay more than others.

3rd-the location where the tutoring takes place is a personal choice. I usually go to the persons house, but some parents are not comfortable with that if they are not at home or if they have other smaller children. Sometimes, meeting at the library is more convenient. I have even had students come to my house on occasion because that was the convenient thing to do.

4th-what they call you also depends on how you know them. If I tutor a student from the school I work at, they call me Mrs. ___ because that is how they know me. If I tutor someone from a friend or from a different school, they either call my Mrs. ___ or by my first name whichever they are comfortable with.

Re: Tutoring

I tutor SAT math. I get $65 and go to their house.

I have also done favors for people who can't really afford that so I'll do it for $20 or even free. BUT they have to come to me.

A friend of mine used to get $100 for CalculusChat Icon

Callan, for what you do, I think you can charge $60.00 per hour ... probalby a little more depending on the family and their circumstances. SOme girls in my district charge $75.00. I usually charge $60.00 when i get kids from my school.

Re: Tutoring

I do charge $100, and I've been told that I'm CHEAP. But I agree that it depends on WHERE you're tutoring (in terms of neighborhood).

I tutor HS English and also for the SAT's. As far as where I go, it depends on the family. I've done the house thing and the library thing.

If the kid is from school, s/he calls me Mrs. On the rare occasions it's been a kid not from school, s/he's called me by my first name.
