NPR: But could use some input

Ok, first a little background. DH and I got married civilly last August. We had the whole big wedding planned for this coming October - I used to be on LIF (FutureMrsPrado). Anyway, we got our BFP at the end of June, and about a week later I found out I was getting laid off. So we decided to do the civil ceremony to make things legal, so I could have the same last name as DH and DS, and also so I could go on his insurance because I was losing mine.

We had planned to still do the big wedding, but with me not working (I was put on bed rest, so I couldn't work), we quickly realized it wasn't going to happen. However, we really want to have our marriage recognized by the church, so on our 1 year wedding anniversary this year, we want to renew our vows in the church.

We can't afford the big wedding still, but we wanted to have something small, like in a private room in a restaurant. Is it worth it to do that? I wonder what people are going to say that's it's not at a hall? Would it be better to just to do the church with only our parents present and not invite family & friends?

My opinion is it doesn't matter where the after party is - a grand hall or a backyard..but I know some people (family) might have their opinions and criticism. Chat Icon

Also, if anyone has any recommendations of places that can hold 75-100 people..a restaurant with a private room, or a garden, in Nassau or Queens, I would really appreciate it. TIA

Honestly I dont think people will say anything about it being in a restaurant and not a hall. If they love you and Im sure they do since your having a small thing and want those who mean the most to you there.. then it wont matter were the after part is. I say do what you want. I think its sweet.

eta: also sounds like those that you know will critize you.. they will critize even if you did have in a hall.. some people are never happy and just need to find a way to complain about something.. so I say SC REW them and do what you and your DH want.

I agree with 2beans. Those that are going to criticize you are going to do it whether you have it at a KofC or Oheka Castle. I think it is wonderful that you are thinking of doing a party to include everyone since it matters to you!

My brother got married in my parents back yard. So many people snickered when they first heard about it, but it was one of the better weddings I have ever been to (besides my own of courseChat Icon). Guests were able to stay as long as they wanted. Food wasn't a limit until it just plain ran out. Liquor was pour your own so you can over or under pour as much as you wanted. It turned out to be an amazing affair. You can do that too, even at a tiny place!

who cares what other people think? Do what you and your DH want to do! Halls aren't all that..... Some of the most gorgeous weddings are unpretentious parties in a back yard with kids running around.....

and no matter what, someone will comment about something.... some people are just that way...

so go where you both want to go... I'm certain it will be a beautiful day Chat Icon

We had our engagement party at Pompei in West Hempstead. It's a nice place, the food is delicous and they did a great job! I would inquire about Sunday's in the winter to get the best price possible. We delt with Jay and she was so easy going. GLChat Icon

DH and I also only had civil ceremony. We didn't have a big wedding for few reasons, I am Orthodox he is Catholic(it's complicated). We didn't have money for a big church wedding and the biggest reason, I do not have any family here, they are all overseas and they can't come for the wedding even if we had one.
And to be really honest I never wanted to be a bride in a white dress and spend a fortune on a wedding. It's just not me.
At this point if we were to have a church wedding we would also do something very small and just rent a small place. I really could CARE LESS what people will say or think. It's my life and our wedding. We will do whatever is best for us(if anything) ,KWIM?
