What modifications do your children get? How do they qualify for a scribe?

I teach special ed.

My students get a range of things .... they all get extended time to either time and a half or double. Some get a scribe, some get tests read, some get a 5 min break every 30 mins.

They qualify for it based on what's in their IEP. If you find based on classroom observations that the student should be eligible for one of those modifications, you can have it added to the IEP.

In my district it is very difficult to get a child a scribe. More often, the child gets extended time, directions read, spelling doesn't count (can't think of the legal term), separate location and/or questions read. Using a scribe is actually difficult for the child according to the law. This is because the adult CANNOT spell any difficult words for the child or add in any capitals or punctuation marks. Therefore, the child has to dictate his or her thoughts and every so often you have to stop and ask them, "How do you spell "democracy", "precipitation", "beautiful", etc. or whatever the word was. Then the child has to go back and edit the writing for capitals and punctuation. I've worked in elementary for 8 years and I've only scribed once. It was honestly a frustrating experience for the child.
