Steps to buying...
I hope I don't sound ridiculous when I ask this....
what do you think the first step should be to the home buying process?
DH and I just started looking. We have a pre-qualification already. I think we should go to the bank and meet w/ the mortgage broker to determine exactly what we can/should afford and then begin viewing homes. What are your thoughts?
Also, besides mlsli.com, what are some good websites for house hunting?
Thanks!

We used Zillow too....also had a realtor who emailed us new listings like every day which was helpful. Meeting with a mortgage broker to be sure you are comfortable with what you can afford is definitely important, so I think you're on track too! You can always check out some open houses to get your feet wet

I would also use some online mortgage calculators like this one from well fargo to get a jump start estimate of what you can afford: http://partners.leadfusion.com/tools/wellsfargo/pathway/pw_home01/tool.fcs

Re: Steps to buying...
Do yourself a favor and make an appointment with the Long Island Housing Partnership (you can Google them). They will help you out with the process and educate you about everything.
Since you have a prequal, you can start seriously looking and make offers if you like (the seller will take you seriously because you have a prequal, whereas other offers might not be so attractive). Then, once an offer is accepted - start shopping around for mortgages. It's best to figure out what you can realistically afford, though, before you start making offers, which is why I recommend the LIHP.
MLSI was my favorite, too. Just go to as many open houses as possible once you decide where you want to be. Good luck!

Re: Steps to buying...
When we started looking, I picked up a copy of Home Buying for Dummies, which was very helpful in explaining the entire process, from figuring out how much you can afford, to finding a broker, to closing costs, everything. It was definitely a great resource for us, since we knew nothing in the beginning.
