Long Island accents - need sound
I don't know if anyone listens to the CT/LI NPR station, but they did a great piece on the LI accent.

I thought the mouth rounding was really interesting...DH and I were trying to talk with our mouths rounded without a LI accent and it was virtually impossible!

I don't have a thick accent but I definitely say "cawfee" and "dawg". However, I really don't know anyone who says Long GUYland. Does anyone here say it that way?

Re: Long Island accents - need sound
This type of information fascinates me!
The "dz" sound cracks me up. No one admits to doing that but speech speaks for itself .
Who remembers those Linda Richman skits on SNL?

Re: Long Island accents - need sound
Since I moved from NY, I'm definitely more aware of the various accents people may have. It's truly amazing how you can tell where a person is from. I went to college in DC and now live in Chicago, so I hear lots of differences.
I don't have much of an LI accent any more. There are times when I'll say something and someone will point out that my NY roots are coming out.
My freshman year in college was hilarious, my suite mates and I were from different regions. I was from NY and the others were from Cali, Atlanta, and Milwaukee. It took a few weeks to get used to how different we sounded and to understand the different slang words we all used.
