i ALWAYS sent thank you's when i interviewed. IMO, it can't hurt.

a thank you note will only help
if you had a mediocre interview, they may give you a second chance
if you had a great interview, you'll stay in the front of their minds during the process.
ETA: you can do one note to the director and write please extend my gratitude to the interview panel.

I always sent thank you notes for every round. I always sent individual thank yous up to three people. Once it was four or more, I sent to the head person and added "and interview committee."
