fungal infection (diaper rash)
ok so we're almost going on a wk of dealing with a diaper rash and i fell awful for my dd bc she is sooooooooo uncomfortable/in pain when we change her diaper......i was originally doing destin and then i switched over to butt paste but yet again it looks like the diaper rash got worse (her butt literally looks burned) after using it
just got off the phone with the doc office and we have to go in at 345 today for the dr to see it but the nurse said it sounds like a fungal infection that needs an antibiotic.....my question is what do they usually give? cream antibiotic or oral liquid antibiotic? tia

Re: fungal infection (diaper rash)
this may sound insane - but dave recently had a rash type thing and a close friend of mine is a nurse and suggested any of the 'athlete's foot' creams for him (it was around his neck, from sweating at work).
she said it also will do WONDERS for a baby with a bad diaper rash (but PLEASE confirm with a pediatrician). We got him Lotrimin and used it for 3 days and the rash is GONE.

Re: fungal infection (diaper rash)
My son had 2 really bad raw sores in between his butt crack (sorry TMI). They would hit up against each other and he was so uncomfortable and would cry everytime his diaper was dirty. It took about a month to clear and 3 doctor appt. Finally, the doctor gave me a pres. for bactriban (sp?) and we used a ton of triple paste and it worked. Good Luck.

My DS has had several fungal infections from being on antibiotics for ear infections. We use Lotrimin AF twice/day, and triple paste at diaper changes in between that. It clears up VERY quickly once the Lotrimin is used. That is what my ped instructed us to do when it's fungal and it ALWAYS works.

Re: fungal infection (diaper rash)
Abby had a fungal infection from the antibiotics she was on. I was told to use Lotrimin on her "area" 2 times a day (used for athletes foot as a PP said) and it cleared up.

Re: fungal infection (diaper rash)
they will probably prescribe nystatin which ins an anti fungal cream. Alexa battled a wicked on for a while.
You will have to apply it 2-3X a day and on top of that you need to apply a basic diaper cream to keep a protective barrier over the area.
Also, try to "air" her out at least once a day, after a bath is great when the skin has been cleaned and there are no ointments on it and the skin can breathe

Re: fungal infection (diaper rash)
I was given a prescription for Nystatin powder for DD and a script for Hydrocortisone. Together, they took care of the infection within a week.
