Excercise = being constantly sick?
I've been working out fairly regularly since January... and ever since then I have been sick soooo often! In past years, when I was lazy, I would get really sick maybe once, and then one cold. This year I've had 2 bad colds, the stomach flu, and an upper respiratory infection. And now I'm sick again.
The only thing that has changed is that I'm working out and eating better. I take my vitamins, I'm not omitting anything (except for maybe some higher fat foods). I don't get it! Has this happened to anyone else? Or am I just allergic to exercise?

Are you sleeping good? Are you working out in gym where there is a trillion germs? Keep up the good work and maybe eat some immune boosting foods and wash hands A LOT....

Re: Excercise = being constantly sick?
Wow I'm sorry this is happening--I'm sure it's super stressful to feel so sik when you're trying to be so good to your body. Make sure you drink lots of water all day and you said you're taking vitamins, so make sire you get enough vitamin C. And maybe you should invest in some antibacterial hand sanitizer for after the gym if that's when you do your workouts--there are a lot of germs out there! I hope you start feeling better! Stay strong!

This has happened to me too.. I just read an article today that talked about the benefits of exercise but mentioned how the strain on your body does temporarily lower immune function & I was thinking to myself, hmmm maybe that's why I got sick so many times last year.

Sorry that is happening. Maybe it is just a coincidence. Most people I talk to comment about how eating healthy and working out has helped to keep them more healthy then when they are eating unhealthily and for myself that is true as well. I rarely get sick. Hope it turns around!

Re: Excercise = being constantly sick?
when i started increasing my cardio i got sick a lot. more time at the gym meant more exposure to germs and people in close quarters (i could be on a bike in spin class next to someone sniffling or sneazing) so i sometimes caught little colds from that. then when i started feeling constantly run down, my nails started peeling, my face was pale... i started to worry. i asked a doc and he said it was my diet (i am a vegetarian). I have since had to incorporate fish into my diet to sustain my level of activity ... and being tired like that really messed up my immune system...

Really? Where was this article? Im reading a Fitness book by Dr. Lisa Callahan and she says the opposite. Regular exercise improves overal health and immune system. Was this in a fitness mag? Thanks.

I think it was an online article...... I'm trying to remember which site I was reading The article wasn't really about immunity though, it was about something else but it was just that one line that mentioned it that stuck out in my mind. It said "temporarily" though, I don't think it was trying to say that it is an overall effect, probably just during the workout while the body is under stress.

Re: Excercise = being constantly sick?
Deb, The book Im reading did mention that if you work out too hard, over do it then your body's immune system gets weakend. I thought about this post when I was reading this last night. Some folks work out too much and that can make the body vulnerable. OP mentioned this on her post...
