The only one I know anything about is Jones Day. They have big offices in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. I went to law school in Pittsburgh and they did some heavy recruiting of the law review students at my school. They were well known in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. I don't know if they are still more heavily concentrated in those areas of the country but if that is the case then maybe they don't have the NY type big firm hours. I'm pretty sure that they didn't start out as a NY firm but I know they are huge now. I probably have some law school classmates there. If I can find anything out, I'll let you know.

I don't have any inside information about the first 2 firms, but a partner from the last firm was recently involved in a sexual harassment charges and I believe the firm sued the partner for defamation. I don't remember the exact facts, but I am sure if you google it you can find out! I know this may be irrelevant to your friend's decision, but its good to know!

The only other thing I wanted to add is that with respect to work/life balance, it has been my experience that a lot depends on the partners you work for. There can be a few partners in the group that are great to work for and others that expect a lot more hours-wise. Sometimes it is hard to tell beforehand because you don't always know who you will end up working for.

However, insider information can be helpful so I will ask around and see if anyone I knows has any "insider" info!

We use Kasowitz for employment law. I don't know anything about the working conditions, but I can say that every single attorney we work with there is a pleasure and the partner we work with in particular.
