If you are an only child...
Did you ever wish you had a sibling? And in what circumstances?
I am really struggling with the decision to have more children and would like to hear some of the issues only children have dealt with growing up.
Thanks so much.

Re: If you are an only child...
I was an only child and I loved it growing up. Now that I'm older, I wish I had more siblings because my parents depend on me for many things. As morbid as it may seem, it would also be nice to have other siblings around when I experience a loss of either parent.

Re: If you are an only child...
I am an only child and the most difficult thing is that I lost both of my parents (my dad when I was 11 and my mom when I was 20) and I think that it would have been better to go through this with a sibling, rather then on my own..

Yes I always wish I had a sibling. Not as much as when I was younger but as I got older I did and now that I am married and have a child of my own I wish she had an aunt/uncle/cousins from my side. I also wish I had someone to help share the burden of my mom as she gets older. Its hard to be starting my life and have to worry about my mom as well. I know that having a sibling isn't a guarantee for help but I would hope for the best. These are some of the reasons I will have at least 2 children.

Re: If you are an only child...
Not only am I an only child but so is DH (his mom's only. His dad remarried and had they had 2 children)
I didnt mind it so much when I was young but when I was a teenager and even now when I see my friends and cousins with their siblings I get a little jealous and even envious. I truely wish I had someone I can go to with my problems, share clothes with, have that companionship, have someone when I need to make decisions to talk to, and when the time comes and I'll need help with my parents to have someone to go through those things with.

Re: If you are an only child...
DH is an only child and I am 1 of 4. Personally I love having 2 brothers and a sister even moreso now than when I was a child. They are my best friends and we can turn to eachother and lean on eachother when something is wrong. I wouldn't change it for the world.
DH on the other hand is having a really tough time. His father passed away 5 years ago and his mother is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO(get my point) dependent on him. She can't do anything for herself and always looks to him for help for even the smallest of things. He often gets stressed out and always says how hard it is that he is the only one.
The other thing that I think is sad is our son has no cousins or Aunts and Uncles from his side. I sometimes feel bad b/c I feel like it is all about my family but that's all there is .

I am an only child too. I always wanted siblings when I was growing up. I was so jealous of all my friends who had brothers and sisters. Now that I am older, I wish it even more. I would love to have siblings who are married and have children. I am a family orientated person and when my parents are gone, it will be so sad not to have any other family. DH and I have discussed this issue a lot and we both agree we want at least 2 kids if not 3.

Re: If you are an only child...
I am also an only child and I was even an only grandchild on my mom's side. As a young child I wished I had a sibling but as I got older and became more aware my parent's circumstances I really appreciated being an only because I had a lot more than I would have had if I had a sibling (i.e., attention, dancing school, trips etc.). As an adult I have at times wished to have a sibling for that companionship that everyone talks about, but at the same time having a sibling doesn't guarantee that kind of relationship... both my parents are 1 of 4 and neither of them have good relationships with their siblings so for that, I'm grateful to be an only.
DH and I only plan on having one child at this point.

I was set on only having one child (I had morning sickness the entire pregnancy) But then my best friend lost her father to cancer and she was so upset she didn't have asibling to go through it with it changed my mind for me. Her mother has just been diagnosed with bone cancer (less than 2 years after her father passed) and she is so upset. I can't even imagine going through what she is without my sister and brother

Re: If you are an only child...
Thanks everyone for your input. I'm sorry to those of you who have lost parents. I can truly understand where you are coming from in expressing your desire for a sibling. I guess like everything else, there are pros and cons to both sides. I think this is the hardest decision I have ever had to make.
