Spin-off (sort of) law firms
DH has been interviewing for two law firms in Frankfurt, Clifford Chance and Fresh Fields. I know they are some of the top law firms, but I was wondering what the working hours are like.
He has been working at a reputable law firm in Sydney for a few years and hasn't had crazy hours, but enough.
TIA!

Re: Spin-off (sort of) law firms
Frankfurt, Germany?
What practice area? I work for a vault top 10 law firm, in the NY office. While I don't have experience with those particular firms, I can speak to hours at big firms generally... I think the office you are in makes a difference, though. I would expect the culture at our European, Asian, and even other US offices to be a bit different than NY. I can speak to what NY associates are doing, but not so much what our offices abroad are doing...
FM if you want more info.

Hi! Yes, Frankfurt, Germany. He is in banking law. He works at a big firm here and I was wondering what the hours are like in Europe. The hours here aren't so bad compared to what I hear from DH about NY firms. He says when he is working on a deal and he calls a NY office you can ALWAYS reach them! Don't forget Sydney is +14 hours ahead of NY.
Do you have any info about these firms in Europe?
Thanks!

Re: Spin-off (sort of) law firms
I'm not familiar with the European offices. I know for my firm, at least our London office keeps similar hours to our NY office -- long. I could only guess, but I would imagine that most European offices are fairly similar in terms of hours, expectations, etc. I think NY is probably the worst anywhere, though. LOL Banking law hours can be unpredictable (duh, I'm sure he knows that)... can be very busy when working on a deal and quieter when a deal or closing is less imminent... I would think European offices of large firms would still expect 2,000 - 2,100 billables per year, but again I'm just guessing!
I wish I could be of more help. I'm a litigation associate in NYC... so I (literally) began work at 8 AM this morning and am still working... luckily from home, but I'm going on 16 hours today. This isn't normal... I normally put in 50-60 hours per week. Because I have a trial going on now and one looming in a few months, I'm doing more like 80 hours per week... which, in a word, s ucks.
Sorry I can't be of more help!
Completely off topic, but I have always dreamed of visiting Australia!

You are so right about banking hours being strange at times! DH is either working hard or hardly working!
You can visit Australia! On the travel board there is a special price on flights! Under $1000 round trip.
