Sounds like you work in a school. Often I find staff doesnt like to mingle with adminstration (sounds like thats what your advisor is) it is silly and petty and at the end of the day....working in a school is like being in high school

If he didn't invite the three people who ditched you and your advisor to sit with him, I really don't think he did anything wrong. I think the three who left your table were lame, though.
Another POV - you or your advisor could have invited him to sit with you.
For all anyone knows, this guy had no clue and just came in and grabbed a seat to eat lunch. Again, the three idiots who got up and went over to sit with him, rather than just invite him to sit at the table you were all already at are the ones who I think are really wrong here.

I work in a middle school and a lot of the teachers act like middle school kids. Elementary teachers act like elementary kids, and of course, HS teachers act like HS kids. Anyway you look at it, it doesn't paint a pretty picture.
How the whole social hierarchy thing carries into our adult lives is so fascinating to me!

my previous job was like that as if we r in high school. so hated it. i would try to avoid this n eat out on my own. i hate associating myself with people like that.
