my son won't wear button down shirts! help!

ok so my son is going to be six next week. and for the past couple of years he refuses to wear a button down shirt. oh btw he has pdd.....anyway i have just given in and not bought him any. but for holidays and special occasions i would like him to wear them. does anyone have any advice on this or have dealt with this too? give me your opinion on what to do!!!! he will cry when i try anything with buttons on him. so i don't know if i should just leave the issue alone or address it?

Honestly, given that children with PDD often have their little quirks, I wouldn't push the issue because he likely won't give in.

what about writing a social story with him as the main character? Kids on the spectrum respond really well with them.

Re: my son won't wear button down shirts! help!

DS is only 2 but I use "ways" or making do what I need him to.

If I listened to him he would not have wore a coat last Winter. After finding out that he LOVED to go outside, I asked him if he wanted to go out and in the car (loves riding in the car!!) so he understood that it was an incentive. Coat = going out (which he loves).

We had the same problem with the hat this Spring. He has a very fair skin so a hat is a must in the sun. So again, "do you want to go out and go on the swing?". First few times he removed it. I put it back and asked him if he was done with the swing. Finally after 1 hour he understood. hat = outside. So when we go run errands, he put his hat on after I tell him we are going out. I remove the hat in the stores so he feels like it's just for "outside" and he does not feel like it bothers him too much.

What if you try to tell him that he can wear the buttom down shirt and in exchange you will put a sweater or sweater vest on top of it?

I agree with using a social story or some sort of reward system to get him to start wearing the button down shirts.

I wouldnt push it. There are a million things that he can wear that look nice, in the scheme of things it seems like a small battle I wouldnt choose to fight.

But in your situation a hat is a must so he doesn't get burnt, and a coat is a must so he doesn't freeze outside.

I'm having a hard time understanding how a button down shirt is a necessity. I'm not trying to be a snot about it, but I honestly say (as a mother of a ten year old with PDD and his own quirks) pick your battles and save the rewards for things that really matter (like homework, hygeine, safety, etc.).

no it's not a necessity and i haven't put one one him in 3 years. i just wanted to see if anyone else has gone through this. for the longest time i didn't know if this was a battle i would choose to fight and i haven't, but i don't know if i should start or leave it alone? that was my question
