Is any one a assistant mananger or manager of a retail store?
My DH got a PT job in a retail store back in October. He has been doing really well there & he enjoys it. He hates his regualr job but is comfortable there & is scared to make any moves especially in this economy.
Anyway his retail job has been talking to him about givnig him more hours and maybe giving him an assistant manager position with more pay & possibly manager not too far down the road. But to be manager he would have to become FT & be available whenever they need him. One manager & one assistent manager are both leaving to go help get another store back on its feet. so these position are open.....
So my question really is how much do thinkhe would be making as an assistant manager and how much as a manger. I know this may vary greatly but i am hoping to get a ballpark figure.
DH regular job doesn't pay that much & I think this retail opportunity may be a really good thing!
TIA!

Well, what store is it? Is it a chain we would know because then maybe someone works for them and would be able to tell you for sure.
I know my friend works for the Gap and he makes around 35-40 thousand a year there as a Manager but not the main one - not sure if it is considered "assistant". He has been a manager for only about 1 year or so - maybe a little more.
I have another friend who is a manager at Chico's and she has been with the company for about 5-6 years. She is a manager and is definitely the main store manager -- she makes around 58-60.

Re: Is any one a assistant mananger or manager of a retail store?
i used to be a retail manager about 4-5 years ago. for an assistant manager back then the salary ranged (depending on store volume and experience) from 30k-45k for full time. for store manager, again depending on the above, anywhere from 50k-60k to start. i know a manager now making between 70-80k which is terrific, but this person has been a store mgr in retail for many years... but the possibility to make money and have security is there. my one thing would be to make sure the store is doing well financially and making goals otherwise it could be a hard road ahead as mgr.

Hi There. My mother is a manager at a Things Remembered here in AZ, so the salary is probably different. I can tell you this...she's miserable. She's been working retail in a manager role for about 4 or 5 years. She wants out. It burns her out. You have to deal with staffing issues, covering issues, holidays...it is manditory that she works. Around those times it is normal for her to work 10 days in a row. Just wanted to give you a heads up. Good luck!!!

Re: Is any one a assistant mananger or manager of a retail store?
I have worked in retail pretty much my whole life. I am now a consultant in the retail industry (although I only work with the corporate offices in the IT departments now). However, when I was an asst. manager and manager, the salaries ranged considerably between companies and also experience. There are also high-end retailers that usually have commissions as well. In my experience, comissions vary from company to company, as in some companies allow managers to be eligible for commission, and in some they don't.
Retail is a tough world...lots of hours. Working weekend most of the time, holidays, etc, but it can also be a lot of fun. If your DH enjoys it, and the salary is comprable to what he is making now, and he doesn't mind the long hours/weekends/holiday, give it a shot. There is always work in retail!
