Weird feeling
We recently re-hired a very senior level person into our department. I work for the head of the dept and one other person who is senior but not as senior but busy and one or two others as needed..low volume. I am currently working for him as well.
My main manager is very busy and most of the time I am busy with her work. There are definitely times I am not that busy and I am able to work for the others more.
The new manager won't be busy and ramped up for a few months and my boss and I have the understanding that we will see how it goes.
She asked me today about another exec admin that may be moving out of another dept. I told her what I thought of her (good) and she asked me if I could work with her. I said yes. (no lie) and she suggested she work for this new manager. I thought it was a good idea but I don't know if he would be busy enough for a one on one admin. My boss suggested that she could also work for this other senior person I currently assist.
Leaving me with just working for my boss and random other things that come up department wise.
So while speaking with her I agreed with her (momma didn't raise no fools) but felt a little threatened. I mentioned to her that it was a good idea and that could open me up to some other opportunities to help her. Nice spin right?
But after I got off the call I was feeling off. It's obvious that when this new manager ramps up he will be busy and the other senior person I work for has been getting busier and busier. She is also pretty emotional and if she needs something right away and can't get it she has stressed out before. That's fine, everyone has their style but I know she must feel like a second wheel to my boss for my attention.
So now that you've gotten this far, please weigh on on my paranoia. My boss is very supportive of me but we've never really talked about other duties for me. I would love to branch out of the admin role even if it's halfway to get my bearings on something.
She seemed amenable to that when I mentioned it but I'm not sure she was expecting me to say that.
Am I super paranoid for no reason? I have no reason to doubt my job or my performance. This just threw me.

Re: Weird feeling
I think you are being paranoid for no reason. Your boss keeps you very busy and is probably looking to lighten your load a bit. Didn't you recently post about being way too busy and doing the work of more than one person? (Sorry if I am thinking of someone else's post...) I really wouldn't read that much into this at all..

Re: Weird feeling
We are all doing more now with less people here. I'm ok with that. I just feel like maybe they feel the job I'm doing is not up to par with the load and I hate having that be the reason.
But I immediately go to that place instead of the place of reason which is my boss needs me to be busy with her stuff and not 4 others and we always had a one on one arrangement and we both liked it that way.
Having said that, I still want to be that team player saying yes instead of no which brings me back to the paranoid place. The environment is tough now and that adds to my nervousness.
Finally, if my boss really felt that I was not doing a good job I really believe she would sit my paranoid butt down and tell me.
I just had to get that out there because DH didn't let me get the whole story out before he said some stupid things.
Thanks

Re: Weird feeling
If I am reading correctly, when the new manager gets up to speed, there will be 2 exec admins for 3 (sometimes 4) people.
This is a good thing. There's no way each manager will get the assistance they need if there isn't another exec admin.
This is a great time to be able to showcase your talents and be brought into larger, more complex projects.

That would be my preference of course. Scary prospect but exciting. I can't possible support 4 people (two who will be extremely busy) with any efficiency. I just feel that I should be able to even though it's probably not feasible.
Making the transition from admin to a professional role is difficult here. I've seen others do it and suffered in the past years riffs. An admin in my position is only respected for who you work for. That is truly the case with my role. I would like to be respected for my work and the way to do that is take on projects and do them well with the backing of my boss and her guidance.
The more I think about it the more I realize that eventually there was going to be a need for more support. I just didn't think it would be proposed like that.
