Another leave/$$$ question

I'm a NYC guidance counselor. Dh and I are trying to time TTC so we ave a summer baby (I know there are no garuantees, and that it can take one night or years. But this is the best-case scenario for us). I want to take an extended (1 year) leave after Chat Icon arrives. Do I still ge paid over the summer if I give birth in July or August? My sick days get wiped out, right?

Any info is appreciated, and my payroll secretary is also my principal's secretary. I don't want to ask her these questions in his office!!

I am on LI so I dont know if your situation in terms of pay is the same as mine.

We have a choice to get a summer check or not. This is money withheld from all of our paychecks during the year. Some people choose not to do that. We are technically 10 month employees.

I got my "summer check." I gave birth at the beginning of August. I did not get any "sick pay" bc school was closed, I didnt have to take "sick days"

FMLA started the day school opened, so I got 12 weeks, but that is in relation to the leave, and medical benefits.

I hope I didnt confuse you. And your situation might be completely different in NYC.

I had my baby in mid August. I would say you would get paid for your 6-8 weeks.
Also you dont have to use the days in your bank for non school days.

You would get your regular summer pay. They won't make you use your banked days unless you actually take days off from work.
I delivered 6/7. I used my banked days to get paid for the rest of June, then I got paid regularly for the summer.

Did you go back in Sept? Or did you take more time off?

I agree...they will start using your bank days when you actually miss school. You'll get your full summer pay if you work the whole year. You can extend your leave for a year....they'll stop your pay when you run out of days. I did this and in fact continued to take an extension. You have up to 4 years to return on each child. There is no guarantee after the first year that you will still have a spot left in your school. All depends on seniority. I'm going back after 6 years (I had two dc's in that time)....I at first was excessed from my school, but was told just last week ago that someone is leaving so I have the spot for right of return.

Good luck

Very cool, I may wind up getting paid for longer than I thought. Chat Icon

I wonder how "right of return" would work for me. I'm the only counselor in the school (not counting a displaced ATR).
