Middle School english teachers...

I know I have asked this before, but what novels do you teach?

Anyone teach "newer fiction"?

Right now I am teaching The Giver(novel), On Borrowed Time(play) and The Diary of Anne Frank (play) and a boat load of short stories.

I have been searching for something new for the past 3 years and I cant find anything I love.

I just read The Hunger Games and think it could possibly fit with the whole dystopia theme of the Giver, but I don;t know if that is overkill.

The Red Pony (Summer Reading)
A Place Called Ugly (Summer Reading)
A Christmas Carol (in class)
Children of the River (in class)
A Midsummer Night's Dream (in class)
The Wave (play version) (in class)
Diary of Anne Frank (in class)
Farewell to Manzanar (outside reading)
Hiroshima (outside reading)

We start the year with A Christmas Carol, and it's always really great! The kids love it, but it's challenging!

I have done/will do:

The Outsider(6 and 8)
The Indian in the Cupboard (6)
Maniac Magee (6)
The Great Gilly Hopkins (6)
Speak (8)
Fever 1793 (8)
Bud, Not Buddy (6)
The Giver (6)
The Red Rose Box (6)
Bull Run (8)

What grade are your kids? Mine loved Speak, but that's a bit heavy for any grade lower than that. Sixth graders loved Maniac Magee.

Another book I loved was The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi. If we had a set, I'd definitely do it.

I'm not an English teacher, but I just got an offer through the journalism education association for a free vocab book for the Twilight series if you want me to forward the info to you, let me know... (I have no clue if that is age appropriate for you or not)

I actually bought that book cause I am a dork. HAHAHA. It's more SAT prep though and my kids are a bit young.

I teach 8th grade.

Inherit the Wind is a 9th grade work in my district.

Midsummer is a HS play.

Not sure if my director would go for Speak....it's about a rape, right?

The "newer" fiction I teach that the kids really seem to like:
Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements
Tangerine by Edward Bloor
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen

Other novels I teach are:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Tex by S.E. Hinton
The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen

Re: Middle School english teachers...

Last year I did Number the Stars, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Gossamer. All three were excellent novels.
This year I'm doing City of Ember first. I'm also going to read The Giver and others I can't think of right now:)

Yes- it's a bit heavy. My school bought a set, though, so I figured the higher ups approved. Chat Icon

I just remembered Stuck In Neutral- I forget the author's name. It's about a boy with cerebral palsy who thinks his father is going to euthanize him. It's short but there is a lot to discuss. A lot of the kids loved it.

Re: Middle School english teachers...

Jen- The Hunger Games was great. I read it too this summer!

Life as We Knew It was great and would be suitable for MS or struggling readers.
