Spinoff to HEAT: Ladies with newborns/little kids
We put our heat on very late into the winter. We both do not like sleeping with the heat on, but with a baby on the way Dh thinks we should turn the heat on soon to take the chill out.
What is a good temp to have the house at with a newborn?? Or do you think just bundling them up at night is ok??

the ped. told us that 70 degrees is an ideal temp. for a newborn. however, we tend to keep the heat at about 68 in the winter; i don't think it will be a problem. newborns go to sleep very layered as they cannot use blankets (so if you're having a winter baby they will probably have on a onesie, then a sleeper and then a sleep sack or swaddle.

We keep our heat very low (around 62-64 in the evening). We use LLBean footed pjs for DS and he was warm fine.

All the SIDS experts agree--68/69 anything higher and you put the baby at a higher SIDS risk.

my kids are very used to the no heat thing. we are at G'mas & G'pas right now and there will be no heat until november (we did the same thing in our own home). my kids are going on 4 & 5, but have always had to deal with the cold.
like PP said, bundle him / her up and keep heat around 66-68 and he or she will be fine.
you'll be up so often in the night you'll know if the little guy has a cold nose or not!!

we use to keep the heat at 72 everytime we had a newborn. now we are down to 66 when we're at home.
i think it goes something like this: if you turn down the thermostat 1 degree, you will save 3% of bill durng the heating season. something like this.

I had a January baby this year and we kept the heat at 65-68 depending how cold it was. DS was layered and swaddled. I think he was fine.

we have the heat set to 73 because our house gets COLD but DS's room is just above the garage so his room is always the coldest in the house. we just put him in a fleece sleepsack and he's fine. for a newborn i'd do the same - fleece PJs and a fleece sleepsack or swaddle.

DD's room is over the garage too and it usually gets freezing, we do keep her layered and have the heat on at 68-69 at night and 70-71 during the day

DS's room has been very cold so we've had him in fleece pj's w/ feet and I've had the heat around 70 at night.

We too keep our heat low around 62-64 at night - usually 68 during the day. We checked with our ped if this would be ok & he said that it's fine.

I put my kids in sleep sacks, but my DD's room is still always really cold so I put a small portable heater with an adjustable thermostat set to 68 in her room. It only turns on if it goes below 68.

We have our heat at 60 at night and 64/65 during the day.
Babies have flannel sheets, footie pj's and fleece sleep sacks. Last year when they were newborns they wore fleece footie pj's and were swaddled.

DD was born in February - We also don't like keeping the heat on, we like it cool, but with DD as a newborn we had the house set at 72.
DD has a separate heating unit in her room so we can regulate the heat in her room and I keep the thermostat there between 68-70 degrees. 3 out of the 4 walls in her room are outside walls and her room is on a slab rather than over our finished basement so it's a bit cooler in her room than the rest of the house.
