Re: Has anyone ever has a split? (work in 2 schools, guidance, speech etc)

yup!! i'm the only speech therapist in 2 elementary schools.
i am evenly split 2 1/2 days at each school ( FRidays I go from one school to the other at lunch time)
It is definitely crazy at times!! i always have a ton of materials for lessons that i lug between the schools. plus, they gave me a laptop last year, so now i have that to lug, too! i miss a lot of meetings about my kids because i'm at the other school on the day of the meeting... things like that.
BUT, any job i've had in speech has been in 2 different schools, so i don't really know any different.
Its doable though... i think you just have to be a little more organized and plan ahead more. like the other day, i had 3 kids that I had to send paperwork home for. i knew i was going to be at the other school for the next 2 days, so i stayed a few minutes late and made sure i got all of the paperwork out, so that it wasn't delayed another 2 days. i'm constantly writing myself e-mails and notes about "don't forget to bring this to the other school" LOL
and you also have to let the parents know that you are split between 2 schools, so that they're more understandnig if it takes you some time to get back to them about anything. I find the teachers are really supportive about stuff like that, too-- i get a lot of sympathy from them for all the runing around I do Chat Icon
Chat Icon it'll work out! feel free to FM me anytime!

Thanks Chat Icon

My cousin is a SP split bw 2.

My issue is in my original school I was there for 5 days..so I did a lot more than just my mandated.

The parents are used to me helping and seeing all the kids (many of the ones who dont have an IEP)

Now that I am there for 2 days...I just wont have the time by the time I am done with my mandated...

I guess I will have to wait and see and just let the parents know I am not there and evenhthough I would like to help...I dont have the time...I mean even if I stayed late the kids arent there lol...

I'm not a guidance counselor or SP, I'm ESL but I am split between two buidings each day and it does suck, especially when you forget something you need for one building, in the other building.

In bad weather it sucks too.

yeah.... thats another tough thing. you can't do all that you want to do when you're juggling both schools.
I would definitely let the parents know the new situation, so that they (hopefully!) understand when you're not going AS above and beyond as you use to.
its tough, but you just do what you can and do your best for the kids Chat Icon

Thanks guys Chat Icon

I know I will get used to it.

I just hate to let my kids down.

I had to tell many of the non mandated that their groups are being canceled for the time being (this school year at least, hopefully next yr I will be back fulltime)

I just feel bad that I wont be there everyday for them.

I feared that it was going to happen to me this year...and probably next year. I'm not looking forward to it Chat Icon
