Re: nagotiating hospital bill
When I got the bill for L & D, I called up the hospital and asked them what I can do. We ultimately decided on doing a payment plan, but they did say that if I really couldn't afford it, they would waive it completely. It was only a few thousand dollars, but I was surprised they would waive it - it's worth a shot calling up and seeing your options!

Have you asked the doctor to accept the rate the insurance company will pay? Mine did.
It's worth a shot.

Re: nagotiating hospital bill
We're you advised that the doctor was out of network before the surgery?? If not, this is a good way to negotiate the bill and/or get him to accept the insurance company rate.

Re: nagotiating hospital bill
My mom does neurosurg billing and we actually were just having a conversation about this this morning. Try contacting your insurance to either get them to pay at a higher rate or for them to contact the doctor's office on your behalf. I imiagine you may have to call several times to get someone helpful. I had a problem with a doctor balance billing me when they weren't supposed to (went on for nearly a year) and my insurance company intervened on my behalf. It's worth a try. Good luck!
