Help, advice, tears....blighted ovum

hey guys, it was me, Lana. I was seven weeks pregnant yesterday when I noticed some brown spotting in my underwear. Tried not to panic, but called my doc and went in for transvaginal. I was so upset because we were supposed to go Wednesday, DH and me, to hear the heartbeat for the first time. I was thinking, "I'm sure it's fine! DH is going to miss the heartbeat!" The second the tech inserted the probe, I saw her face and she said there was a sac, but no fetal pole. I had no idea what she was saying. I returned to my doctor, waiting for them to fax the report and was told it's a blighted ovum. My HCG and progesterone numbers were so amazing, I had no cramping--no major signs--so this is beyond devastating. Today, the next morning, I'm still not really bleeding. Is there any chance this is a misdiagnosis? I need to have HCG done today to see if the numbers are dropping, and then a sono again next week. No one mentioned that it could be wrong--just that I have to wait for my body to flush it out, or have a D&C, though she prefers for my body to handle it naturally. I was crying all night. I was so excited, so ready for this. So happy to tell our family on Thanksgiving.

Update: So there is very very small chance my dates of ovulation/conception were miscalculated and that i could still be fine. I had HCG done today, the doctor encourage me NOT to get the d&c until we see the numbers and then do a sono. And if it is what we think, she doesn't think I'll need the d&c, she thinks my body will flush it out. I just hope that if that is meant to happen, it happens fast.
I'm reading a few stories of misdiagnosed blighted ovum, and then 2 weeks later, there was baby on the screen. I'm not getting excited or anything; it would just be one huge miracle.

i've had 2 losses and both times i never experienced cramping or heavy bleeding. Every person is different. I'm no doctor, but I would think that if you are 100% sure that you are 7 wks and there was just the sac that unfortunatley it's not a misdiagnosis. But again, i'm not a doctor so I'm only guessing.

I'm really sorry that you are going through this. I know it doesn't seem like you will get through it, but you will. we are all here for you! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Im so sorry for your loss Chat Icon

I didnt have any bleeding with mine either. We went for a sono at 7w1d and babys HB was very slow. We went back a week later and there wasnt a HB at all.

Even after that, I hadnt started bleeding. There was about a week lapse time from the diagnosis until I decided to have the d&c. I just wanted it over as quickly as possible.

I'm so sorry for your loss - Unfortunately you can have a missed miscarriage where you think all is well, and then you find out that there's no heartbeat anymore - this happened to me twice.

I know how incredibly hard this is on you - please FM if you ever need to talk.

Hi Lana, I just went through the same thing. Here is how it went down with me. I had my 1st DC 10 months ago through IVF I was diagnosed with low ovarian reserve or early menopause. I missed my period in September and went to my RE, they did a beta and I found out I was pg. I went on for a 5 week sono and they saw a sac and fetal pole but no heartbeat. I went in for a 6 week sono and still only a sac and fetal pole no heartbeat. They told me they would expect to see more but to just come back in a few days. I went back at 7 weeks and the sac had decreased in size slightly and no heartbeat. That's when they told me it was a blighted ovum. I was devastated. I thought I really ahd a miracle after all my fertility issues. My options were DNC or they would give me misoprostol (sp) and my body would do the rest. I waited 2 more weeks to see if my body would do something. Nothing happend in 2 weeks and my HGC levels continued to rise. Before I went in on Friday my levels were in the 31,000's!!!! I had this slight hope in the back of my mind specially after I googled blighted ovum and read a story on a misdiagnosis. I think anything can happen. Maybe they miscalculated your date. I would go back and see what happens next time.
Give your body a few weeks to see hwat ahppens If nothing happens think about your options. I did not choose a DNC because of the risks. It has not been easy these past few days and I am still crmaping and hurting a lot. But I think it was the safest decision for me at the end. I still want to have more children. I wish you the best of luck. I truly hope it is a misdiagnosis for you. I am here if you need anything I know exactly how you feel! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm so sorry for your lossChat Icon like the other girls said..I didn't bleed, I went in at what I thought was almost 8 weeks and there was just the sac...nothing else.

I opted to take the meds and not have the D&C...I knew mentally I couldn't handle waiting for it to happen naturally b/c my doctor told me there is no telling when it would start...at that point I just wanted to start to heal.

If you need anything feel free to FM me..Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so sorry for you loss. I also had no bleeding and no signs of a m/c. When I first saw the sac empty at 10 weeks, it broke my heart and I didn't want to believe it. It was the hardest thing I ever went through. If you need to talk or vent, I am here. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am so sorry you have to go through this.

I can share what I have experienced.

With my 1st m/c I had some slight spotting. I was 6 1/2 weeks pg. There was a sack but nothing else. They did blood work and the levels were not rising. I began to have cramps. I m/c naturally a couple of days later. With my 2nd m/c I went in at 6 weeks and there was a sack but nothing in it. My levels were rising so I went in at 8 weeks and there was a heartbeat. At 10weeks the heartbeat was slow. at 11 1/2 weeks there was no heartbeat. I had no cramping or bleeding. Complete shock.

I wish you the best. Wait to see what the doctor says. hang in there

Re: Help, advice, tears....blighted ovum

I went through the same thing in Sept/Oct. We thought the dates might be off but things were not developing how they should. We waited a few weeks, just in case but the diagnosis was the same. I still even had PG symptoms! I think that's what made it worse, the symptoms and the numbers going up. Even if they weren't going up appropriately they were still rising. My doctor said that my body still thought I was pregnant! How awful! I had no bleeding. I had a D&C b/c I knew I couldn't wait for my body to do it naturally. He said it might take a while considering my numbers/symptoms. I am so sorry. We are all here for you.
