Re: "The 7 foods experts wont eat"......Thoughts?
I've been eating organic produce for a while. I eat natural/organic poultry and I will not eat farmed salmon ever. I bought a popper for popcorn but sadly I still drink milk and eat beef that is probably not good for me.
For a while I stopped all milk products because of hormones but I went back to it.
HFCS is almost everywhere. Very hard to avoid but I know plenty of folks who do.
I will still use canned tomatoes but honestly I'm not a super user of those so I'm chalking that up to moderation.

This article was frustrating to me. What ARE we supposed to eat then? Not everyone can afford an organic diet.
But I won't eat microwave popcorn anymore after reading that.
I think you do the best you can, if you know what is good to avoid, use an alternative when you reasonably can. As the article said, if you can't afford organic apples, peel and wash regular apples.

I think it's partly about choices, too. I have to cut back on other things so that I can afford the higher grocery bills.
We have always lived in a time when you could get any fruit or vegetable at any time. That was not always the case. For instance, the reason that ‘traditional’ thanksgiving side dishes are like sweet potatoes & squashes is because that’s what was being harvested at that time. If you wanted corn in the winter you grew it yourself & ‘canned’ it or you were forced to eat seasonally available foods.
Now we get food imported from warm climates so we can have watermelon in January. The fresh fruits & veggies need to be picked under ripe or they would spoil before they could be shipped here and need tons of pesticides or they would be destroyed by insects before they could get here.
I know it’s depressing & it seems like ‘well what the eff am I supposed to eat??’ but you learn how to do it, it just takes time & being informed and making choices. We need to worry about it NOW when our grandparent’s didn’t because it’s gotten worse & worse and will continue to get worse over time.
When we were kids was every commercial about some prescription DRUG?? No, but now the multitrillion dollar pharmaceutical industry wants us to be sick so they can make us healthy. I know it sounds like a huge conspiracy… and guess what, it sort of is.
This is a good (very long & detailed) article that talks about a lot of this - each link on the right takes you to a different section of the article: http://www.eat-well-to-be-well.com/organic.htm
I know it’s not for everyone & some people don’t care or will ‘worry about it later’. Just be informed & make the decisions that are best for you and your family. For my DH & I this is huge, so we make sacrifices in other ways to eat this way and we feel this is the key to living healthier for longer.

I try to feed my kids all organic fruits and veggies. Any meat they eat is from Whole Foods which is raised naturally with no hormones and grass fed. Ronan drinks organic cows milk and Declan drinks organic soy milk(dairy allergy) Anything I can buy organic , I do. Our bodies are so exposed to so many toxins daily just in the air and water we shower in. Every bit helps.

Thanks so much for the link. I am a true believer in natural and organic. We may pay more now, but we'll save in the long run through lower medical bills.

I knew this already and agree with it and I don't use any of them.
I make sauce from Fresh tomatoes.
When I go to the market Organic is expensive expecially at Whole Foods but I have a list and stick with it and if I am not buying cookies/chips and junk then I can still do a grocery for 3 for under $100.

Re: "The 7 foods experts wont eat"......Thoughts?
this stuff always confuses me.
I thought i wasnt allowed to eat meat much anyway (altho i LOVE steak)
I am supposed to eat salmon but not every day like I could and its good for me (but only now if its wild as in wildy expensive)
What's wrong with corn? I like corn, corn is good, corn is truly American.
I always peel my apples I hate the peel taste but loved it as a kid
Milk - well i dont drink it much and I'm sorry but Orangic is painfully expensive.
Oddly enough i do by organic veggies. Its just easier to buy what I need and generally its the same if not cheaper than a chain store. I live within walking distance from a organic store.
I think moderation is key. Always has been, always will be. We're all going to die of something it seems. Tomorrow it will be something new.
Wish 'good' food wasn't so expensive. Then again, I couldnt afford microwave popcorn as a kid and even now, so I guess that's a winner. And I can't afford steak like I used to, so winner again .. same for salmon. I live off pasta, chicken, pork and hamburger meat, so I guess Im gonna just sign my life away.

The 7 foods that experts wont eat
They include canned tomatoes, corn-fed beef, microwave popcorn, non-organic potatoes, farmed salmon, milk produced with artificial hormones, and conventional (non organic) apples....
Thoughts on this? I am aware of the benefits of organic food, but the news about the canned tomatoes, popcorn, and salmon I didnt know...
The sad thing that is missing from the article, is that ALL canned food contains BPA. Whether it is tomatoes or corn or string beans. This came up when Suffolk County banned BPA in children's items. After they passed the ban they amended it b/c as the law was written originally it banned BPA in every single canned good on the supermarket shelf.
The news about the acid in the tomatoes and its effect on the BPA was interesting. I have organic canned tomatoes in the house right now that I use to make sauce. I've never seen tomatoes in anything other than a can. I will have to look in Trader Joes as the article mentioned.
Organic apples are relatively easy (and inexpensive) to find at this time of year. Maybe 10¢ higher than non-organic apples.
Organic milk prices are coming down. I get 1/2 gallon at BJ's for only $2.99.
I buy beef so rarely, that when I do, I don't mind the price.
DH will be crushed about the microwave popcorn. I'll have to dig out my popcorn popper from my mom's house.
Organic potatoes?? I know the danger of root veggies, but until two weeks ago I hadn't seen organic potatoes in any store. I disagree with the article about potatoes growing. Mine sprout all the time if left too long.
Oh well, as a PP said, something will be the death of us all. You do the best that you can with the resources you have, and hope it is good enough.

I live in NC but I buy organic potatoes all the time. Tonight I bought sweet potatoes and yukon golds-1>99 and 1.69 per lb. I know you can get them at Whole Foods-if you have one of those near you. We do a lot of our regular grocery shoping in Harris Teeter but a lot of the stuff for the boys comes from Whole Foods

Apparently Cento makes crushed & diced tomatoes in a glass jar. I've never seen it in a store, but I never really looked. An Italian store might carry it if the super market doesn't.
Cento
I have also found these boxed tomato products in A & P in Westchester so Waldbaums might have them on LI (same company)
Not sure if stop & shop has them.

I buy red meat so infrequently..mostly eat it out and I suppose it's corn fed beef.
maybe my infrequency won't hurt me too much.
I'm just happy that I can find the natural chicken..I eat a lot of chicken.
I wish I could afford the wild salmon so I don't buy it often. I buy other wild fish instead.
I think Salmon is the #1 fish and everyone gets paid from it and that's why the wild stuff is so expensive. grrr...$19.99/lb or more! It does taste way better than farmed though. It's supply and demand.

I believe Annies makes an organic ketchup that does not have corn syrup. Whole Foods or Fairway might have other brands as well.
It's a shame we have to worry about HFCS being in EVERYTHING.
DH and I (and now our baby) are really big into eating natural, seasonal, local and organic when possible. Yes, some stuff is $$$ but like some others said, when you buy seasonal it really makes a difference.
For those of you that are interested, you could look into a neighborhood Co-op that carries local food or a CSA.

Most of this I knew already because my DH is really into nutrition & sends me articles all the time. The beef is a big one, we only eat pasture raised grass fed beef. Cows are not meant to eat corn, their bodies can’t handle it so they pump them full of hormones to keep them alive, it’s awful.
They are actually given antibiotics to keep them alive, too. The hormones are so that they grow larger.
We do buy organic meat and poultry from our butcher, but that doesn't mean we never touch anything else. I won't stop eating canned tomatoes - if that's the worst thing I'm eating, then I consider that a good week for me.
I'll try to dig it up, but there is a really good article about being "smart" when buying organic. Example -- it's not as important with bananas as it is with, say, apples and root vegetables. I'll see if I can find it.

For those interested (and obviously, we're not in the growing season now, so this is for the summer time) but here is a good article on canning/how to jar tomatoes yourself.

Trader Joe's also makes Organic Ketchup and it is delicious! I am not a fan of ketchup in general but honestly, I could eat Trader Joe's one with the spoon!
