So, it took me a mere 3 months...
I picked James up from the sitter this afternoon and he was napping in his carseat with a blanket over him. I was rushing to get to a dentist appointment, so I quickly put him in the car.
When I got to the dentist and went to get him to put him in the stroller, I saw that he was completely slouched over. He wasn't buckled in. AT ALL!
Holy crap - I can't tell you all of the "what ifs" that were going through my head.
Lesson well learned - always check the straps.

Don't feel too bad. I did it once and according to a thread on here a couple weeks ago- most other parents have done it at least once!

Lesson learned... we all do stupid things and learn from our mistakes. Please, our parents were far from perfect and we're fine. BTW... did sorta the same thing. Had the strap on Mason very loose and never tightened. I realized on the drive home and DH usually meets me outside to help bring him in... I ran in with Mason and he's like... I would've gotten him. I told him I wanted to bring him in. Lesson learned for me as well and I will double and triple check his carseat

BTDT We're human, we make mistakes
I realized the straps were twisted on the carseat when I came home today...the mall was packed and this guy was waiting for my parking spot so I was rushing....what a stupid reason to rush putting my DD in the car seat

Ugh, I did that twice with my DD when she was a NB. Scariest thing ever!
Don't be too hard on yourself, I think 90% of us have done it.

Been there, done that. It's an awful feeling but you just have to breathe a sigh of relief that you made it safely and you'll definitely be extra careful now.

Re: So, it took me a mere 3 months...
I did something similar tonight. I had to borrow my friends truck to take DS to the pedi. I put the base in his truck and tightened it down. SO I thought. Went to the pedi no problem. On my way home I went around a bend and DS's seat and base tipped over a little bit. DS was strapped in the seat but it scared the living daylights out of me. I pulled over and saw that the lap part of the belt had some slack in it. DS was fine but I was kicking myself in the a$$....

I did it once too! I was juggling so much to get out of the house I thought I had strapped her in and when I got to Target I snapped her into the stroller and went to loosen her straps and un-clip them and realized I never even strapped her in! I felt awful and I scared the cr@p out of myself and it never happened again but we've all been there. Don't beat yourself up. In the end, he is fine. That is all that matters.

I'd LOVE to be, Mason goes to sleep at 7. I was thinking of that too, but he gets his last bottle at that time then down for the night around 7:15. You guys around next weekend after Xmas? Maybe Sunday? The boys can play with all their new toys together...

Re: So, it took me a mere 3 months...
I've done it too... twice... once was a full 5 min trip the other I realized when I was just off my block and I pulled over and fixed it right away... The good news is they were both when DD was just born and it hasn't happend since, so I guess I learned from it!

Thanks for sharing your stories everyone!
I just can't believe I didn't check the straps. I drove a good distance, took 2 separate parkways. With my luck lately, I'm shocked something didn't happen.

Don't worry you didn't do it purposely
One time I got home and realized I never snapped the carseat into the base It was just plopped on top....thank God nothing happened!

I did it once too. It scared the crap out of me enough that I never did it again.
When these things happen, it's also a reminder to me to be a bit easier on DH. I say to him, "if you did this, I'd be so mad." He's a wonderful guy because he just agrees and lets it go.

Re: So, it took me a mere 3 months...
Don;t be too hard on yourself! As new parents we all make "mistakes". For us it was when Mattea was about 3 weeks old and laying on our bed all the way in the center, we both turned away for a second and she has rolled her way or skooted i guess to the edgge of the bed..luckily there were 3 huge cushy dog beds there that would have broken the fall but man did it scare me!....

Re: So, it took me a mere 3 months...
Everyone does it!
I did it at the same age. It's harder to forget as they get older but when they're NB they don't move around much and all it takes is a second for you to get distracted.
Don't beat yourself up too much!
