Your School Nurse

good or bad?
'

I think ours in horrible..(im in NYC if it makes a difference)

apparently it isnt her job to help take care of a child who had an accident.. not even her job to call the parents.. it is ours... (when should i do this? wait till prep?? ) oh and the poor student has to stand in our class wet or worse until parents come, if they dont have clothes.

also, i had a kid who had a the runs, mom had sent him in (that is another story) and had said she lwould be picking him up at 11. anyway by 10 the poor kid had gone to the bathroom several times and looked miserable and in pain. sent him to the nurse with a para, to say just have her call his mom to come earlier he is miserable. The nurse sends him back says he doesnt have a fever, let him wait his mom is coming in an hour..

are you kidding me??? i got on my cell called his mom and she was there in 10 min. the poor kid was in pain.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Your School Nurse

my nurse now is great...but NYC was another story.

1. we had 2 beds for a school that had 4200 students

2. If a parent couldn't come and get a sick child (which was often, since most are working parents), they would send sick kids back to class...seriously ill students...no wonder the swine flu spread so quickly in NYC in the spring.

Re: Your School Nurse

The nurses that I have seen in NYC were not good. My mom is a school nurse out here and I would tell her some of the things that the nurse at my school did and she was horrified. Especially with the whole swine flu thing last year and kids were routintely sent back to class because no one could pick them up and they were obviously sick.

Re: Your School Nurse

she's awesome. so sweet and she has an excellent rapport with students and staff. even the staff goes to her when we're not feeling well and she always keeps us updated if there is strep, fifth's or anything in the building. she even checks our hair (if we want) when there was lice in the building. when i was pregnant, she always checked in with me to make sure i was feeling okay, esp. when i was in my 3rd trimester.

i am in LI district.

Re: Your School Nurse

I am in NYC and our nurse is TERRIBLE.

He once sent a kid back to my room all flushed with over 102 until his mother came to get him. He said the kid did not look sick enough to warrant staying in the nurse's office. Ummmmmmmm yea, the kid ended up falling asleep in the back of my room. He lookeed AWFUL! This was before the spring break last year, right before all the swine flu stuff came out.

Everyone has complained about him at one time or another. Similar to what a PP said, he has sent kids back with stomach viruses and vomiting Chat Icon Chat Icon Whenever I pass by his office he is sitting there by himself on the computer. I would LOVE to have this man's job!

ETA: I just remembered another part to my story. When the nurse sent the 102 fever kid back to my room, I went down there to complain and he claimed he had NO SPACE for the kid to stay there. In the meantime, there was nobody else in there and the nurse has all his stuff on the one bed in there (his bag, coat, etc) Which actually skeeves me out because that bed is probably filled with germs.
Hmm, never mind... since sick kids probably never lay there anyway!Chat Icon

Do we work in the same building? Chat Icon (although we have a little less than 4200 ... but ONE bed!)

Re: Your School Nurse

As a school nurse my mom gives the parents a certain amount of time to come and if they don't come and the kid is really sick she calls 911 and then it is the parent's problem.

Re: Your School Nurse

Ours is not so great..a kid can be REALLY sick with no fever and she refuses to do anything unless they have a fever..additionally, and this is not really her fault, she has a voice problem and parents are always freaked out because she calls and they can't understand her..mostly, she complains and plays solitaire..she's not a bad person, but definitely lacking...

Re: Your School Nurse

I adore our school nurse. She was a former L&D nurse, then moved to emergency pediatric care, then became a school nurse. She is a medical god in my book- takes every illness seriously.

Re: Your School Nurse

Our nurse doesn't do anything unless the kid has a fever...of course that might be a directive froma higher up. I had some kid at the beginning of the year sitting in class crying hysterically because she felt so miserable- the nurse wouldnt even let her lie down. According the nurse she had to give other kids their medication. So I guess that means the poor sick girl, who cant get in touch with her parents, can't lie down in a bed?!

Wow, I work in Long Island and we have 3 school nurses (plus a secretary) for about 2000 kids. I didn't realize how lucky we are!

I was thinking about this post today when I (somehow) managed to fall (up) the stairs in school. Chat Icon I really banged myself up and went right to the nurse, who checked me out, cleaned up my scrape, and gave me ice packs all day long whenever I stopped in for a new one. I guess I'm lucky... never really thought about it before.
