Diabetes?

Both of DH's parents are insulin dependent diabetics....DH has been concerned about this for a while so lately he has been using his dad's old glucose monitor to check his blood sugar. he usually runs at about 130ish (which is a bit high, right)

well yesterday, before he ate, he took it and it was 263 Chat Icon Chat Icon

he is going to the doctor on wednesday for a screening.....

Re: Diabetes?

263 is very high. It should be between 80 and 110, so while 130 is technically high, it isn't that bad, and could just be the monitor is off. 263 isn't a bad monitor, though.
It's good that he's getting it checked out. There are so many complications from uncontrolled diabetes. However, if it's maintained, it has only a minimal impact on your life. I've been insulin dependent for 24 years.

Re: Diabetes?

263 is a very high number. He definetely needs to go to the dr.

Diabetes runs in my fathers side of the family. My father has been a diabetic for around 15 years now. I get checked yearly as well. At first they may have him try to control his sugar levels through his weight/diet, if that doesnt work they will start him on medication. My father only recently started taking insulin within the past 5 years. Before that he took pills.

Re: Diabetes?

Way too high - like Goldenrod, i am a type 1 diabetic, been so for 26 years. Like was posted, if the diabetes is under control, the person can live a normal life. There is so much advanced medical technology that makes life easier. It is good that he is going to the doctor to confirm that reading. any questions, you can fm me too

Re: Diabetes?

The doctor will almost definitely order an A1C blood test, which gives an indication about how his sugar levels have been for the entire last 3 months. The best thing he can do is to find out right away whether he needs treatment. If it is left unchecked, then if he later gets treatment, I don't think it really undoes the damage done before he got treatment. My husband has been insulin dependent for 22 years and his mom has Type II diabetes which is currently not in control Chat Icon Chat Icon . Good luck and you are doing the right thing. The 130 number does not sound terrible. Some people are consistently in the 300s before they ever realize anything is wrong so you are lucky you have access to a meter.
