ABA question
I am a SPED teacher on maternity leave. So I decided to take some part time work with an agency. I just got my first case to start this week. I have never really done ABA. I have taken several courses on it. I am soooo nervous. Where do I begin on writing programs for the st.? Do i take from goals on IEP?? How many programs do I do in a 2 hr. session.. Where do I buy material and reinforcers???? St. uses a dynavox. I am not familar w/ it. Any suggestions or tips please... TIA

Programs should be based on IEP goals but you may need to break the IEP goals down into smaller pieces for programs.
How many programs you do depends on the student. I would bring a few games or other activities. 2 hours is a long time to do trials without a break. As far as reinforcers, I think you have to see what the child is interested in.
You said they use a Dynavox- do you know if the student has any speech? Is all communication done through the Dynavox?

Ch. knows a few signs. Ch. is non verbal..What kind of games do you think? I am going to pick up some day doh..

That's tough. I think you have to meet the child first to get an idea of the games they can play. I've worked with kids who were nonverbal and very low functioning and others who were nonverbal but understood more. They could play memory, bingo or other simple games. It really depends on the child. I think play doh is a great idea to start with. Good luck!

For the first week or so, I would go in and build a rapport with the child. I would establish myself as a reinforcer- follow the student around to see what kinds of things they like to do. Make yourself as reinforcing as possible. Then, I would do an assessment such as the ABLLS to see what skills the student has or does not have. Also, you might want to see how proficient the student is on the dynavox. I know I have a student in my class on the dynavox and she is not really that proficient with it, but it came with her from her previous school. Depending on the students abilities, that is when you write programs based on their individual needs. I do follow IEP goals, but unfortunately, sometimes, the goals on their IEPS are way too advanced for the students - so you have to start somewhere. Let me know if you need anything.

Do you have a team leader creating the programs for you?
Aside from the IEP goals I would talk more with the parents and observe the child and base the programs on that as well.
Is the agency providing you with data sheets, binder etc?
