What qualifies you to be induced?
So besides for being past your due date..what makes your doctor schedule you to be induced? I feel like being induced mostly leads to a C
I REALLY don't want to have a C and if I go past my due date..I would rather just let myself go without being induced.
I may look back at this when I am 40 weeks and begging for them to get him out of me!

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I don't know what else would qualify an induction. I was late, was induced at 41 weeks, and had a vaginal birth if that helps. Not all inductions lead to a C.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I'm being induced a week early, on Sunday night at 39 weeks. We are doing it because my AFP results were poor (indicative of DS). We confirmed our little girl does not have DS through CVS, so they then look at what other things those results could mean. One of the big things it often leads to is a problem with the placenta which could cause growth restriction, lack of norishment etc. I've been very closely monitored during my pregnancy to make sure she's doing ok. That possibility combined with my low amniotic fluid levels has them worried that something could go bad fast, so they'd rather induce a little early to avoid an emergency issue. I've talked it over with my doctor and the perinatologist and I decided it was the best and safest option for us on Monday. That decision was confirmed last night when my amniotic fluid levels dropped even lower requiring me to be on best rest for the next few days.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
My doc said if I am past 40 weeks and at least a little dilated- he would induce me at only 2 days past my due date.
I asked him about inducing leading to C-section- he says not. There are alot of factors which would lead to a C, not being induced.
Im also worried about that but at the same time , if is not here by 1/16- i want her OUT, no matter what!

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
i was induced on my due date because i had pre-eclampsia. 26 hours later i had a c-section because i wasn't dilating. my body just wasn't ready to prepare on it's own, but due to the pre-eclampsia, he had to come out.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
A giant baby can make a dr. induce early- usually from gestational diabetes.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was actually induced 4 days before my due date. the baby had stopped gaining in the last 3 weeks and i had severe back issues and couldnt really move anymore, but i was also dilated already so he thought i wouldnt have any issues dilating more.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I had Gestational Diabietes. My OB practice does not let GD moms go past 39 weeks.
I was induced at 39 weeks. I'm probably the exception, but I was not dialated, no where near ready to give birth. I had a very easy induction progressed quickly and had a very easy vaginal delivery.
ETA: My DD was not large either 6lbs 11oz

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was 5 days late and my blood pressure was high...so my dr. suggested to be induced. 24 hours later...i had a C-section. I stopped dilating at 6 cm and my dd just didn't want to come out!!! I know everyone is different...but my c-section recovery has been amazing!!!

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I live OOS now and the norm down here is that everybody gets induced and you don't even have to wait until you go past your due date. I'm an L&D nurse and my coworkers look at me like I have 3 heads when they hear I'm using a midwife and planning a natural drug free birth. Unfortunately that may not happen since I have gestational diabetes and the high risk ob is pushing for a 39wkish induction.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced at 38 weeks due to high BP and severe swelling. I was on bedrest for 2.5 weeks prior to that. I didn't develop pre-eclampsia, but all of the signs were pointing towards me developing it and my doctors wouldn't let me go past 38 weeks.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced 2 weeks before my due date. I was 95% effaced and 2cm when I got to the hospital.
I also said I wanted to wait and let everything happen on its own. Unfortunately- something was causing my entire body to itch from head to toe- so bad that I could NOT sleep. I was taking oatmeal baths at 3am. No rash- but I would break blood vessels from scratching so hard. They couldn't figure it out and I finally begged the doc to get the baby out. I couldn't take it anymore.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced at 37.5 weeks due to a sudden spike in my BP, some swelling, and tearing. Even though I wasn't dilated or effaced, I still delivered naturally, so please don't think that an induction automatically equals c-section.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
My sister was induced last night and had a v-birth early this morning. It was pretty quick, actually, probably started at around 8 and she had the baby at 3:45ish....

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
Well, number one, not all inductions lead to c-sections, 50% do.
But, furthermore, most OBs don't let you go past 41-42 weeks, so you can't necessarily just wait it out...
I was induced at 39 weeks b/c of preeclampsia, I had DS vaginally.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced 2 days before my due date because my amniotic fluid was low.
I was induced at 8 pm and had my daughter naturally at 3 am.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced at 39w5d because I had GD and my biophysical said she was weighing in at 9.5lbs. Mine did result in a c/s because I never dilated past 4cm. She was 8.7lbs.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced 4 days before my due date because my sugar levels were really high. I failed my 1 hour glucose test but passed the 3 hour. I apparently developed GD in my 9th month. DS was born healthy and my sugars went back to normal afterwards. My OB originally told me that if I went past my due date, that I would have been induced after a week. DS weighed 8 lbs, 6 oz....

I have pre-existing high BP and my doc told me he will not let me go past my due date and that if he has to he will induce.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
I was induced one week early because my son's head size was measuring really large. Even now, he is in the 95th percentile for head size. I was induced and did NOT have a C.

Exactly. High BP and low amniotic fluid is why I was almost induced two days ago. My dr told me that she would also not go longer than one week past my due date. She said that a lot of doctors will go longer, but she said at that point, babies are so big that they can compress the umbilical cord and that is really bad.
I also spoke to her about a month or so again regarding being induced. Just from reading all the posts on LIF, it seriously seems to be that 90% of the women on here who get induced end up with a C-section anyway - after going through a day of horrible labor and contractions and not progress/dilating. I do not want that for me or the baby and would rather just have a C-section. She seems to be on the same wavelength as me with that. I don't think that means she'll just automatically give me a C if I need to be induced, but, she also said that she does won't try and induce a baby that is not "induce-able." When I asked what she meant, she told me that the reasons so many inductions end up in C's is that the baby is still so high up or the mother when into the induction not dilated at all and it's just not going to happen.

Same with me (except I was 40w4d). I was induced with pitocin starting around 8am. They broke my water around 9am and I delivered my after 20 minutes of pushing at 9:10pm.

Re: What qualifies you to be induced?
Even if you are late you may not need to be induced. I was late and I scheduled my induction for 10 days past my due date. I ended up going into labor 3 days past my due date. I also didn't want to be induced because of the fear of a c-section. I think my doc said that they would let me go 2 weeks past my due date max.
