x-post: be your own advocate!
Hey guys this is just a quick post to tell you that if you believe something is wrong (with you, your child, etc), and a doctor tells you you're wrong, don't let the buck stop there. It happened to me once. Doctors assumed i had lymes put me on antibiotics and sent me on my merry way. 2 hospital stays and countless doctors later, they were all wrong. By the grace of God my mother found the right doctor who knew exactly what i had. Fast forward to the past few months. My dad has been sick since July. He has had 6 hospital stays and 4 visits to ers. His lung doctors said it was his heart, heart doctor claimed it was his lungs, hospitals said it was tied to his diabetes. He had 3 stents put in in the past 6 months for a grand total of 4 (one previously put in). A week ago he grabbed his chest saying he couldn't breathe and he felt like he needed to vomit. My bro raced over with oxygen (he's a fireman and emt) and they raced him up to the hospital (didnt take him by ambulance so they could take him to the hospital where his cardiologist is...extra 5-10 minute drive from nearest hospital). He was admitted immediately. An associate from his cardiologist checked him out and wanted to discharge him saying it was his lungs and to follow up with his lung doctor. My mother said no way is he coming home like this. Cardiologist told her that she is making him go thru a Cath for nothing but offered to do it just to prove her wrong. The doctor was wrong. There was a complication from the stent surgery which blocked two arteries 95%. He just had emergency bypass and is recovering. The purpose of this long story is that sometimes you have to be a PITA if you truly believe im your gut something is wrong. This isn't to put down doctors cause even though in these two instances doctors made mistakes, everyone is human and it is part of life. So lesson in short: be your own advocate!!
