Appreciated at work: men. vs. women. Thoughts?
I read an interesting article awhile ago, and a recent poster's post asking if we feel appeciated at work made me want to hear your thoughts on this.
The article said that women need to HEAR they are appreciated in reviews, etc. They need to hear they are doing a good job. Let's say a woman gets a $ raise, but no praise, the article says she will mostly likely still feel unsatisfied.
However, a man can care less about hearing they are appreciated and do good work; that in their mind, the only bottom line is $.
When I read this, I was kind of suprised that I can relate. I love raises, but I love hearing I am appreciated.
Thoughts?

Hmmm I guess this makes me a man . I'm all about the dough, frankly. A raise or a bonus is a TANGIBLE way to say "you're doing a great job." I don't really "need" to be complimented or acknowledged (though it's nice!); in fact if you're telling me what a great job I'm doing and not supporting that at bonus/raise time, then I'd be irritated. Put your $ where your compliments are.

I could see that.
On another note, I think women (espeically moms!) are more likely to go for certain perks at their jobs, like flexibility or being able to work from home vs. raises (although the $$$$ is always nice).
To me, I feel appreciated if my superiors trust me enough to not micromanage me and my time.

Re: Appreciated at work: men. vs. women. Thoughts?
I think because men don't feel as threatened as women in general. Men get more promotions, etc..
There is a HUGE double standard in the job environment. For example, man Manager complaints to boss about another Manager, it's OK. Woman Manager complaints to boss about another Manager. Woman is asked if she is "OK". Does she have any issues at home? Is she tired?, etc..
I feel men have more of a sense of entitlement than women in the work place.
Women have to fight harder and prove themselves to get similar jobs as men.
It seems women have "learned" that they have to justify themselves a lot more so I guess being "appreciated" means they are on the right track. While in fact it shows unsecurities.
I am talking in general of course.

Re: Appreciated at work: men. vs. women. Thoughts?
I interpret this not as "women care more about being appreciated than they do about their salaries" but as "in addition to their compensation, women also need to feel appreciated in order to be completely satified with their jobs. Men, OTOH, can be satisfied with a good salary and less appreciation."
