Progesterone going down (vent and needing assurance)

I am 1 appointment away from being discharged from my RE and feeling so frustrated even though i know i should just relax, i worry. I have been worse especially since finding out i'm having identical twins. I'm so afraid of something going wrong. So much of what i've read online really freaks me out.

I will be 8 weeks on Friday The babies looked fine this morning. Growing as they should be. Heartbeats seem to be really strong as well. Unfortunately later in the afternoon i found out my progesterone went down since I went off the shot last week. It went from over 40 to 16.5 and I'm a little upset because they took me off of it completely instead of telling me to go down to 1/2ml (which is what i was originally told i would need to do). Now i'm back on the shot and still taking the suppositories.

I know the level wasn't ridiculously low but i'm hoping its ok that it shot down so much. I'm sure it will start to go up again now that i'm back on the shots. Has anyone gone through a roller coaster like this?

Don't worry, my RE was not overly worried when it happened to me. My progesterone was 26.5, then dropped to 14, then dropped to 9 and that is when they put me on suppositories. After being on the suppositories for a week my progesterone went up to 11. At that point they told me to take the suppositories for two more weeks (I would be 9 weeks after those two weeks) and my placenta would then kick in for the progesterone production. I already saw my OB. Don't know if he tested for progesterone, but all seems fine.

Good luck and try not to worry. I know it is hard. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: Also, try not to read stuff online. It freaks you out and worries you for no reason. There is a lot of conflicting research on progesterone.

It was SUCH a shock to us. I really thought the doctor was kidding when he told us. The ironic thing is I have another family member thats having fraternal twins and due the same time as me!

I'm trying my best to take things a day at a time. I had a really rough morning and ended up staying home because i was feeling so bad I was extremely dizzy and naseous and then I noticed a slight tinge of red this morning but nothing to go crazy about. There hasn't been anything since then so i don't want to make myself needlessly upset. I figured I just needed the rest.

Try not to worry!

anything over 10 I was told is fine.

I was released from my RE on the 10th. They had me stop my PIO's the day they discharged me, but had me come back two later for a progesterone and estrogen check (I was also on estrace). My progesterone went from 17.1 to 7 in two days. They were not incredibly concerned, but put me on Prometrium 3 times/day until I'm 12 weeks. (I'm 9w5d now). They still discharged me to my OB.

You are still within range, and as your placenta takes over more and more, the progesterone becomes less of an issue. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ITA. A good friend of mine is an ob/gyn and we were just talking about this yesterday, and she said that same thing...that there is a lot of conflicting research, and that it can be unreliable. My progesterone was as low as 2.6 at one point, but everything has turned out OK so far. Like OP said, if you stay on it for a little while longer until you placenta takes over it should be less of an issue.

Try to relax (easier said than done) and try NOT to read too much on the internet - we can easily freak ourselves out. Its good they have you back on the shots, they didnt let it get too low, I'm sure they are monitoring it well and will continue to.

Re: Progesterone going down (vent and needing assurance)

Im 20 weeks and STILL on progesterone.
first tri was to stop miscarriage and now im in 2nd and still isnt at normal range im on it to stop early labor. My groups drs believe in keeping on progesterone.
would your dr consider putting you back on it?
if not why not get a second opinion.

I've been on endometrin since the beginning, never went off it.

I was put back on PIO on Wed, I'm just not sure whats going to happen after my apt next week since i should be getting discharged to my OB.

First congrats on the twins!!! Identical: that's pretty cool: did you have ICSI?

Second: I've been on the dang injections since day 1 and after cutting back to 1/2 cc, they took my levels and they were 8... at almost 9 weeks. They still want me off the injections and to start suppositories, but have discharged me.

I'm going to ask the Ob to take my progesterone levels in 1 week (week 10).

The nurses told me that the levels really vary widely. I hope it's true!!!

We didn't do ICSI. It seems like this is just a total 'fluke' The funny thing is that every time i go to the RE i feel like a science experiment. Last time several of the nurses came in to watch my sonogram because they were curious.

What really frustrates me is that I know i should have been on the meds the whole time. Instead I was on for 5 days, off for a week, then on for a month, off for a week. I think my levels were too high when i was on 1ML but they should have had me wean off of it to 1/2 and they didn't. It only causes me more upset and worry!

The other thing i'm upset/nervous about is:
