counting coins, HELP!!
I tutor a 2nd grader in math, and they are learning to count coins. He does pretty well with pennies, nickels and dimes....but when you put in quarters, he gets so confused!! Help, how can I help him?? He can count quarters alone, but when you go from let's say two quarters to nickels, he will say 25-50-55-60-75!! and he has trouble counting by 5's starting at any number other than 5!

Re: counting coins, HELP!!
i have students who that happens to also. I would have them put the coin on paper and have them write the amount and add. Put a quarter and write 25 cents then next to it the nickel and write +5 cents. etc. This works for my kids. Once they are able to see it, they will start being able to say it without adding on paper.

Re: counting coins, HELP!!
I use touch money with a lot of my kids who have trouble counting coins. It's from touch math and teaches kids touch points on each coin. They have to count by 5's. So a nickel has 1 point, dime has 2 and quarter has 5. If he learned the touch points, he could start at 5 and go on from there. If you go to this link, you can download a sample page that will show you where the touch points are on each coin. touch money
