called the doctor... finally
I really want to be checked. I've had 2 M/Cs now and I so do not want to experience another The thing is, they were saying that they usually don't see anybody until they've had a third (since with only 2 both times could just be coincidence). She said that I could go in though and at least TALK to the doctor and see if she can order any blood tests to be done. So I made that appointment and it's set for Feb 2nd. I REALLY hope it's not a waste of my time and she just sends me home without any tests being done.
Can anybody tell me about their own visits after a 2nd or 3rd m/c tho? Is it just a blood test that you did? I'm just curious if blood work can find out if it's something like low progesterone or anything like that that be can easily fixed. Honestly, I'd rather find out NOW than to have to wait until (God Forbid) a third

Re: called the doctor... finally
I am so happy you called the Dr to discuss everything.
Is your appt with a RE or your regular OBGYN??
I do not think the obgyn's run all the same tests a RE does. My OBGYN was against me seeing a RE and said I should wait till it happens a 3rd time. I refused to do that and find a RE on my own ( DR Braverman), which was the best decision. I feel like why should I have to wait for this to happen a 3rd time before getting help. I followed all the girls advice on this board and infertility and many said do not listen to your obgyn, go right to the RE. For me it was a good decision.
So when I had my appt with the RE he reviewed history with the miscarriages, review family health,...then the DR went right into talking about all the things that can cause recurrent miscarriages.. ( and boy it was a longgg list of things). Then he shared how he could fix and help almost any of the problems he mentioned.
That day he sent me for a lot of bloodwork. I did the recurrent miscarriage panel bloodwork ( which was over 20 vials of blood), immune/genetic testing, then CD 3 testing which looks at hormone levels and i think can help to determine egg quality.
Then he is doing an HSG where they insert dye and look into your uterus to see if there are any abnormalities, polyps, fibroids, etc....(things which can cause msicarriages)
I am right now currently waiting to get some of the results back..and the other tests I have to wait till AF arrives to schedule them.
If you ever have any questions, feel free to FM!!

Re: called the doctor... finally
I had a repeat loss panel done with Dr. B. At that time I had only had one m/c, but was not able to conceive for 3 years after that.
He found that I have an elevated level of NK cells, all other tests were normal.
Good luck. I hope you get some answers soon.

Re: called the doctor... finally
thanks for your answers
This is actually an appointment with my regular OBGYN. I do feel nervous that she's just going to send me home and say she can't do anything. I'm going to really try to be firm tho and demand some kind of bloodwork done.
The thing is though, I talked about getting a lot of those tests that you mentioned, but the receptionist was saying that it can cost thousands of dollars and most insurance companies won't cover it. So that made me feel very nervous. No way I could afford that. If I decide to go to an RE, I'm just not sure how to proceed. How I'd find one, if I could afford it (if they don't take my insurance). It's a lot so I'm hoping that my regular doctor can just give me some answers.

Re: called the doctor... finally
Call your insurance so you can find RE's under your plan. Then once you go for your initial consultation.... You can always request the procedure codes and diagnosis codes of all the tests they are requesting....And first get them approved through insurance to find out if your plan covers it.
I sent you FM too!
Goodluck!

Re: called the doctor... finally
I haven't seen an RE yet (though I am thinking I should... Dr. Braverman gets rave reviews) . My regular OB gave me a "miscarriage panel" after my 2nd which was at 15 weeks. They tested for thyroid, and different types of proteins, and factor V, etc... nothing came out postive. Hopefully you can get an answer soon! If you need to talk FM me!

Re: called the doctor... finally
Sorry to crash, but I wanted to tell you a story with a happy ending: A friend of mine had 2 M/Cs. They were TTC more or less from the moment they got married, and desperately wanted a baby. They tried one more time - and got pregnant with her son. He'll be 2 in May. She's 12 weeks pregnant with #2, and the baby looks great.
I hope you get the same happy ending.
Your OBGYN may want to try checking that all your hormone levels are within normal range. It's a simple blood test (actually, it's a few simple blood tests at varying points in your cycle). Not sure what plan you have, but your insurance should cover it.

Thank you for that!!! It IS encouraging to hear that story. I hope that the doctor can do SOMETHING for me and that it's not a waste of my time to take off of work and go down there. I'm not asking for some HUGE checkup. I just want some blood tests done to check my progesterone, hormone level, and maybe calcium or whatever too. I just want to know that all of that is basically healthy. And if not, then we need to fix it.
Do you think those kinds of things can be checked? Or do they need to be at a certain time of my cycle. because when I'm going in, it'll probably be about a week and half before AF is due.
And I really do hope that my insurance covers it, but I have no idea how to check up on that.

Re: called the doctor... finally
I'd love the info too!! I had one m/c and insited they run the tests on the "fetus" unfortunately nothing grew in the culture so I could confirm the chromosal abnormality. Prior to becoming pregant had intial bloodwork, a HSG, day 3 blood and DH did a sperm analysis. I am about to do some genetic testing just to be sure before we try for #2 the intital jewish stuff and maybe some others since I did have m/c.
I agree with what Rachel said and advised. I go to LIVF and have been OK with them so far.

Re: called the doctor... finally
I would demand results. I think it is crazy that they make women wait until the 3rd mc. After my 2nd, I went 2 weeks later to a high risk and they did a panel of testing. You have ever right as a patient to get medical advice, request testing or a 2nd opinion even if its just to ease your mind. After dealing with a 4 month mc, believe me I dont take any bull. It is your body and right. Let your doctor know that you want follow-up testing before you ttc again just to ease your mind. I flat out told my doctor that I wanted to go to a high risk and I dont care about the 3 mc crap. What do you have to lose? It is covered with most insurances. Bring DH with you at your appt. I found strength with DH there. Having him there helped in my fight to get answers.
Hope it works out. Keep us posted. Praying for you
