Has anyone seen SHUTTER ISLAND yet? If so, let's chat ... SPOILER ALERT! Update in first post with question
I want to chat about it!
Did you understand the end?
What do you think he meant when he asked "Is it better to live as a monster or die a good man" ???
This is why I think the movie was brilliant. My husband didnt understand the ending which is why I think he did not like it.
In the end, when he was talking to Dr. Shein I think that he did understand reality but chose to get the lobotomy because the pain and torment he endured everyday knowing that his wife killed his children was too much. Plus, the guilt for not doing anything to help her was pure agony for his.
I also think that Dr. Shein knew he was faking it and let him go through with the surgery because he is a caring doctor and in the end felt bad for his patient!
Shutter Island is also an anagram for Truths/Denials or Truths and Lies

Thought it was brilliant! I was surprised for sure ...
It reminded me of Beautiful Mind and The Sixth Sense.
Did you see that coming???

I found the whole movie disappointing. I felt like the part before the "twist" wasn't convincing (and was long and boring) - so I was expecting it.
Sixth Sense and Beautiful Mind were brilliant - Shutter Island wasn't even close.

the only thing that left me confused, why were they on the ferry in the beginning if he had been there for 20 months?

I liked it, DH not so much. Not sure why killing someone who killed your children makes you insane. Unless he went insane after the fact. The movie is one of those you have to rewatch to see all the clues.

right, its not because he killed his wife that he was committed. Its was because he couldn't wrap his mind around what they both had done, and he created am alternate reality after he killed her (that she died in a fire, that they never had children).

they were allowing him to play out the fantasy he had created in his head - hoping it would "bring him back". The ferry may have just part of that charade - its one of those things you don't want to look TOO closely at. Because there are definite holes in the story.

right, and that he created in his mind, Andrew Latham who supposedly started that fire that killed his wife.

thats what i figured. i knew from that first scene that something was funny, i didnt think the other guy was his "partner" and I couldnt understand all the armed guards (until the end)...

yes
SEE THAT IS THE BRILLIANT PART ... lol
He was not crazy at the end. He pretended to be so that he would get the brain surgery so he does not have to deal with the reality of his wife murdering his children and him not getting her help!

I totally agree - I dont think he was crazy in the end. I think he realized that no matter what he wasnt getting off that island so he would rather "die a good man than live like a monster". And, if you notice the whole movie Mark Ruffalo calls him "boss", never by his "real" name. In the end after he says the die a good man part, the dr stands up and calls him Teddy - which is the marshal/non crazy alias, implying that he knows he's really not insane.
Also - in the lighthouse ben kingsly makes it out like they dont perform the conspiracy lobotomies up there, but in the end they show the nurses coming at him with the ice pick like Rachel had told him. (also, if he's crazy, where does the whole Rachel in the cave part fit in? I cant believe he just imagined all that)
I really thought it was pretty brilliant. They did a good job of portraying it to go either way, but i guess thats whats so frustrating - there is no right answer!!

i went back and forth with this but I do think he was crazy. rather then having to come to terms with being crazy and accept what happened to him/his family/his wife, he decided to not put up a fight and went with the doctors to have the labotomy this way, he wouldnt remember any of it

Well, to a sane person that does seem crazy lol Let me rephrase, he may still be crazy but he was aware of who he was, what he did, his past ... and came to grips with reality at the end.
