not a private school teacher, but in the city you need a note from your Doctor giving a medical reason to go out before your due date. You have to take your sick/personal days. Then Maternity starts the day the baby is born.

I'm a private school teacher. You can't take maternity until you give birth, but you can use sick days. For example, a woman at my school is due next Sunday. Her maternity is starting Monday, but she is taking Thursday and Friday of this week as sick days.

you might not be able to take maternity leave, but you may be able to use your FMLA (i don't know if your school offers this) - in which case you'd need a note from your doctor.
