Sensitive quest -- hope it's OK to post on this board? LONG, sorry.

I hope it's ok for me to post this question here, but I'm hoping you can give us some good advice/suggestions...

We're having our younger son's christening next weekend and we have several kids attending, ranging in age from 2 yrs to ~10yrs. We've hired a sitter from DS's daycare to be with the kids for several hours to entertain them/play with them so the adults can relax and have a good time. We're going to have crayons, crafts, hula hoops, Hotwheels, but probably no TV or computer for them.

The sensitive question comes in here -- DH has a 10year old cousin who is autistic and unfortunately we don't get to see him very often because the parents tend to hire a sitter to stay home with him. I'd love for them ALL to come to the party, but I don't think the sitter we've hired will be able to handle 8 kids plus Jimmy. Can anyone recommend a game/activity that we could bring with us to help in this situation? The last time Jimmy was at our house we set him up with a laptop in our dining room (he loves to go online and listen to music) and he enjoyed watching movies on the laptop. Should I try to bring a TV/DVD player for him? Am I worrying too much that he won't have a good time and then his parents won't have a good time?

Again, hope this is OK to post. Thanks for any advice...

I would probably call your aunt & uncle and see what they want to do. If they are going to bring Jimmy, ask them if there are any special provisions or items you could bring along so they can all enjoy themselves. They might offer to bring some of his own items or could offer suggestions. Does he like Legos? Maybe a small Lego set for him to enjoy (they're buy 1 get 1 half price this week at Toys R Us)

I like the portable dvd player idea. Or maybe an ipod with headphones where he could listen to music? I'd call his parents and ask what he likes. Maybe they can supply some dvds, music, etc.

BTW, that is very sweet of you to think of him and his needs!

I think that is very caring of you to make sure he is comfortable at your party.

I know first hand (I've accompanied children to parties) how difficult these situations are.

I would def call the parents and ask them what they think, I am sure he has some favorites that he would like to bring.

I agree with this...and I also need to say it again myself that I really think it is incredibly thoughtful of you to think about his needs. Chat Icon

Thanks, everyone -- I called our aunt & uncle and they're 90% sure they're leaving Jimmy with a sitter, but we're going to set up a laptop for him just in case....that way he can watch DVDs and listen to music if he wants.
