not looking for drama - educate me!
I was talking to someone yesterday who works as an elem. teacher in NY - Queens.
This teacher has her masters and has been teaching for about 4 years.
I believe they make over 60k.
They said they have been working under contract for awhile now under Bloomburg's plan and said she is getting super underpaid for having her masters.
Is this correct, in your view?
I have no viewpoint, as I know very little - and what I DO know, I know only secondhand.
Just curious. I didn't want to ask her for various reasons.

Our contract with the DOE expired in October, we are currently negotiating.
In our last contract Bloonberg gave us a 17% raise over three years..that is HUGE in the world of education.
With this raise he made our salaries competive with LI districts.
From what I understand there are districts that make more and some that make less.
One big difference in NYC is that you can only get salary raises UP TO 30 credits above your masters whereas in LI you get salary increases every additional 15 credits (I think up to 90 credits above). This makes LI salaries jump.
The city has other perks IMO such as you have until your child enters Kindergarden to return to your position.
Also if you are "excessed" or your position is cut you are not fired or let go like in LI. You can apply throughout the city and if you do not find a position you keep your salary and remain in your school until you secure a position (I know people in excess for four years  ).
Do *I* feel I am underpaid? No I feel I make a fair salary as educator's salaries go

Oh I know 
My union rep said it won't happen that he is able to fire ATR's
It is insane bc why are Principals going to HIRE when they can use an ATR and not have to pay them (bc atr's get paid by central)

b/c they can get new teachers that are cheaper. If you officially hire an excessed teacher they get put on your payroll.

unless she has an additional 30 credits above her masters, she is not making 60k. she's making about 55 or 56. not sure if that makes a difference but thought i'd point that out!
i don't feel underpaid but i think i may have a different perspective than some teachers. I previously worked in a field where i worked insane hours and made more money. to me it is a trade-off, time for money. that being said, teachers put in a lot more time and effort than they are often given credit for and i can see why some teachers may feel underappreciated and therefore underpaid.

I think it depends if she can work coverages in her school. I teach middle school and make tons of extra money working an extra period (instead of a prep) almost every day.

In reference to the credits above and beyond your masters I think every district on LI has a different number to reach. My district only goes up to Masters plus 60.

I wonder if your friend is referring to differentials. FYI- Bloomy touts that last raise as putting us on par with suburban teachers, and we are definitely in a better place. BUT teachers in the city are limited to Master's +30- on LI you can do 60, maybe more, and get paid accordingly. I was nosy and curious and looked up the salaries on SeeThroughNY of friends who have been teacher for about as long as I,  and most of them are making about $15-20k more than I am.
In our next contract I would love to see 60+ differentials- I love to take classes but can't really justify the expense if I'm not going to get a raise.

i agree...
also, our last "raise" was not a raise... it was a compensation for adding those extra 37 1/2 minutes for the 4 days extra, adding an additional 150 minutes a week which to most doesnt seem like much but thats more planning on the teachers part... JMO

I agree! I love learning new things but would like the compensation for the TIME I'm putting in.
ETA: For the OP, I definitely feel like I'm making a FAIR salary. Granted, the time off is a HUGE perk but people don't see the EXTRA work that goes on during that time. So yes, teachers make a fair salary but add in the time that goes unpaid and it's not so wonderful.
However, we have a fantastic pension, terriffic health benefits and a union. We are incredibly lucky to be in this field. BUT it's NOT an easy field. Especially in NYC.

I don't work in NY. I have my masters and I am not making anywhere near 60k yet....That's a few years down the line for me....So I say she's not getting underpaid! I would say my salary is fair.

Holy crap! I never knew this website existed. I just looked up some salaries of people who always cry poverty and am SHOCKED to say the least...no wonder the taxes on LI are so high

For all the aggravation that we put up with, all the extra work during nights and weekends, yes very much so.
What I HATE is hearing that teachers are OVERpaid I hear this all the time and it makes me sick that people think our job is such a piece of cake.

Do you work in a LI school or NYC?
Do I think NYC teachers should make more... yes. Do I think LI teachers should be making as much as they do, not in all cases. Sorry.
I know someone who has been teaching for 5 years as a gym teacher in a LI school and is already making $98k/yr. To me that is insane...what is she going to be making 5, 10, 15 yrs. from now???
I'm not saying teachers do not deserve a good salary, especially for all they do. And they are grossly underappreciated by parents. But the line has to be drawn somewhere.
While many teachers complain about their salary's, they also get excellent benefits AND a pension that private companies do not offer. That was the point of gov't and state employees making less...because these benefits were provided.
