Lindenhurst Teacher Layoffs

What terrible news. Does anyone here work for them? What are they saying? Who's going to go? They aren't closing a school, right? So terrible & it seems like they'll be the first of many.

Re: Lindenhurst Teacher Layoffs

I used to sub there. I loved working for the district. The cuts are based on seniority, but one of my former co-workers has been there for 7-8 years and is in danger of losing her job. The school they are planning on closing is an elementary school with the lowest enrollment.

I don't know a lot of details, but according to what I've been reading on facebook pages, 27 of these jobs will be from the high school alone and they are also planning on cutting some extra-curricular stuff.

It is such a horrible time. I said on the NFR thread that I'm putting my dreams of teaching on hold myself because DH and I are ready to start our family and we cannot do that on my salary.

From what I reaf teachers with as many as 7 or 8 years are facing lay off's Chat Icon

I feel terrible for them, the students--how awful.

Parents pay all this money in taxes so their children have good schools and this what they get? ugh!

totally stinks... but what i don't understand is why the union didn't agree to a pay freeze to keep those teachers employed? i thought the union was supposed to back you up. to me, that sounded like the better choice.

From what I understand the union would've agreed to the pay freeze if the board had given them anything - like a contract extension, or a no-layoff guarantee. But they were not offered anything in return.
