Exposed to the HPV Virus
I received a letter in the mail from my GYN yesterday about my visit last month. It said that my PAP was normal but during the screening for HPV, it showed that I was exposed. I had to schedule another PAP for next month. Has anyone had this happen before? I'm a bit freaked out....

Re: Exposed to the HPV Virus
My bff has this. She's healthy and since being diagnosed has had a healthy daughter. She just needed to have pap smears more often than annually for a few years. Don't stress

Re: Exposed to the HPV Virus
It's more common than uncommon. I was tested, but I was not exposed according to the test. But I was told that it was odd that I wasn't exposed b/c most women have been. So please don't freak out!

Re: Exposed to the HPV Virus
Thanks so much for all of your responses. It does make me feel better to know that its so common. Of course I think the worst..but I know that it's likely not a big deal. I go back May 5th for another pap. Does anyone know if they are able to tell how long ago you were exposed? I know that it doesn't affect men in the same way as women but do you think its something that needs to be told to my current and previous partner?

Re: Exposed to the HPV Virus
80% of people have HPV.
In some people it never turns into anything, in others it can be pretty serious.
As far as I know, as someone who has HPV and has undergone a LEEP procedure to remove cells from my cervix because of it, there's no telling when you were exposed. My dr. told me I could have had it for 10 years and it was just showing up at the time that he found it.

I did read that you could have it for 10 years and not have is show up and then get sick or have a compromised immune system at the time of the test and then have it show up. I guess I'll just have to wait and see when I go for the other pap next month. Thanks so much for responding. I didn't know what a LEEP was so I gogled it. It sounds like it's very effective and if (knock on wood) it was needed, I shouldn't have and problems following the procedure. Again, thanks so much for sharing your experience. It really puts my mind at ease.
