Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

I have a question as I know someone who is having some difficulties with her pregnancy and wanted to know if any one else has experienced this. My coworker is 12 weeks pregnant with twins and experienced heavy bleeding last week. She went to the emergency room where she learned that she had a UTI. They gave her an antibiotic and sent her home telling her that some women bleed up until 20 weeks and that she should stay away from heavy lifting, stress etc… She had a sono and everything looked ok. By the end of the week she had heavy bleeding again with cramps. She returned to the emergency room where they basically told her that there was nothing that they could do b/c nothing has changed, the babies appear to be fine, sent her home to follow up with her doctor. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone else feel that the hospital is not doing enough? I know the one time that I experienced bleeding during my pregnancy I was admitted and they ran numerous tests to determine why I was bleeding, they do not seem overly concerned about where the bleeding is coming from. Do you think that this is because she is only 12 weeks? I am just puzzled over how she is getting treated. Thanks for taking the time to read this and for any opinions, ideas

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

I didn't have very heavy bleeding, but at one point during my 2nd PG I went to the ER. I found that they don't do much at all for you. They probably would if you were further along. I was only 8.5 weeks at the time. All they did was check me, a sonogram and sent me home saying that it could be an impending miscarriage or not and that was it. Talk about being upset. They just upset me more after being upset by the oncall doctor at the time. He was very nasty on the phone with me and said that same thing. Chat Icon

So for me, I didn't have a good experience. I wish there was a test or 2 they could have done, but they said no.

I hope everything is ok with your friend! Chat Icon

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

a friend of mine started bleeding heavily around 12 weeks - come to find out she had placenta previa, which causes bleeding. her and baby are okay now but maybe thats what your friend has and they aren't catching it in the ER?

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

I had heavy bleeding 2 times during my first trimester and they really couldn't give me any reason for why it was happening just that some women bleed. Everything was fine with the baby when they did sonos and i'm now a day shy of 32wks.
Have your friend call her OB and tell her to rest!!! No lifting, exercise, sex, etc.

Unfortunately there really isn't anything they can do so early on so tell your friend just to relax and hang in there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I never experienced bleeding like that, but i know some woman do bleed. Its ok to be bleeding from a certain side or something...could be something with the placenta, but if everything looks ok, she should just try to relax to keep her stress level down...good luck!Chat Icon

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

I don't have experience with this, but someone in my family is pregnant now - due at the end of May. She had heavy bleeding and ended up on bedrest because it turned out she has a tear in her placenta. All along I think the baby looked fine. She tried just taking it easier, but the bleeding continued, so eventually she was put on bedrest. After a long time, apparently the tear in the placenta healed! She is no longer on bedrest, but I think she is still trying to take it easy as much as possible.

Everyone is different, so who knows what the cause of the bleeding is for your friend... but I wanted to just share this because my family member had heavy bleeding and everything is turning out ok.

Also, I went to the ER during this pregnancy - not with bleeding, but becasue I had a nasty stomach virus, passed out, hit my head on the bathroom floor, and maybe had a seizure. They did NOTHING. I was only 9 weeks, so maybe they weren't concerned because it was so early? It took hours for me to get an IV, then they did some bloodwork and sent me home. I'm sure you could have a different experience depending on what hopsital you go to, but for me, the ER was very low key about the whole thing.

HTH!!!

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

Thank you guys for your responses, I was figuring it had something to do with how far along she is, unfortunately being told you have to wait and see what happens by hospital staff is not very comforating for her but it does help to hear that other people have gone through a similiar experience and things turned out fine.

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

I am 22wks pg with twins and experienced something similar. I had bleeding, sometimes very heavy, from 6wks-15wks because of a blood clot (SCH). I would suggest that she go to her doctor and get a more thorough sono done. I was still seeing my RE at the time, and they were able to see the clot on the sono.
It was the scariest time of my life, but I made it through and so did my LOs.

I hope everything is ok and that she gets this figured out soon...

When I spotted and went to the hospital, I too was diagnosed with a UTI. I was given an internal and a sonogram before being discharged.

Re: Heavy Bleeding (LONG)

Unfortunately they will not do anything until she is farther along in her pregnancy. I came into the hospital at 19 weeks 6 days with some scare for DS and they would not do anything. When you reach 20 weeks that is the magical date for the hospital. I wish your friend the best of luck. She should follow up with her obgyn.
