Sunscreen for infants

Question...
My due date was on the 20th, but I'm scheduled to be induced next week. Once the baby is home he will be outdoors a lot (well not right away)

What brand of sunscreen do you use for a baby less then 6 months old?

I heard something about Baby Blanket, but wasn't sure.

Thanks

Re: Sunscreen for infants

Our ped had specifically told us no sunscreen before 6 months and no anything on the face (no lotion at all), so you may want to check. That said, we use the California Baby sensitive, fragrance free one and it is super, super gentle so that might work.

Good luck with your new little one!! Chat Icon

Re: Sunscreen for infants

I believe that many peds do not want parents to use sunscreen on babies before 6 months of age because they should not be out in the sun at all. Anytime they are out, they should be covered with a hat and clothing at all times or while at the beach or a park, under a tent or canopy. Allowing or advising parents to use sunscreen prior to the 6 month mark may lead to the mistaken security that DC is protected from the sun. Their skin is sooo sensitive at this point and should be completely shielded until they are a little older. Of course, talk to your ped about this. This is what I was told by my ped. HTH. I also heard no sunscreen for babies under 6 months of age. DS was born last June and we were outside but kept him shielded from the sun and we didn't use sunscreen.

Re: Sunscreen for infants

My pediatrician said no sunscreen before 6 months, but my cousin's told her to use Blue Lizard on her son prior to 6 months.

Re: Sunscreen for infants

Now I guess my ped is different. She said I could use sunscreen on DD earlier than 6 months. She said sunscreen was OK after 2 months, but you just don't hear about it because like PP said, they would prefer you don't take a baby out in the sun at all. If you do, keep all skin covered with clothing. If that is not possible, my ped said it was OK to use sunscreen. She didn't even specify what kind. Chat Icon

I don't think any sunscreen is recommended before 6 months. DS is now 7 months and we are using California baby for his body and Mustela for his face (he has very sensitive skin).

My ped said similar. He said it was better that he wear sunscreen than nothing at all.

Re: Sunscreen for infants

We used regular kid sunscreen on Cailen when we went camping over the summer when he was 3 mts old - we used an organic brand - he was fine!

My ped said it's better than letting him burn!

My pedi said it was ok to use it on DS after 2 months old. Just couldn't put it on his face and hands. We went to Disney in March, DS was almost 4 months old. We used it with no problems. Used hats with ear flaps all the time...
