writing sample question

This one job I want to apply to asks for a writing sample but does not specify the page length or even the type of sample they want. I sent an email to HR (the same place where the application is supposed to be sent) asking how long they want it and whether they want technical writing or not.

They never got back to me and it's been over a week. Should I email again or just apply with my best guess of what they want?

What is a typical sample, 1-2 pages?

a job im applying for wants a sample as well, 1-3 pages. I emailed them about the topic or if it needed to be previously published and it can be random, doesnt have to be published.

so i would think 1-3 pages is a good guide. not too long, but long enough to gauge your writing style.
