Drinking water at 7 weeks?
My peditrician told me when we go away next week to bring bottles of water and if its hot and I need water that DS should drink a bottle of it too. She said to put some sugar in there for taste. DS is going to be 7 weeks on Saturday...
Has anyone ever done this?

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
All your baby needs for the first year is formula or BM. That said-if it is really hot and the baby has awhile to go before the next feeding I might offer water. But probably not...

I never heard of giving a 7 week old sugar water!
If anything, I'd give him extra formula (or BM if you are nursiing). Too much water for young babies is not good.

Really? The dr said that. Unless it is SUPER hot, (and even then) I wouldn't. Unless she meant bring the bottled water to make the formula bottles with incase you are going somewhere with crappy water? I personally wouldn't give it. Formula is all DC needs at that age. JMHO

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
I wouldn't... what's the point? Giving them unnecessary sugar... and they don't need water at that age. I live in FL and my ped never suggested this.

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
My ped allowed tea (either chamomile, or fennel) with sugar, for gassiness, up to 8oz a day. The sugar is a natural pain reliever for infants, they give it during circumcisions.
We give the tea when DS is really uncomfy, and after his shots, we didn't need to give Tylenol after shots because of it.

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
I was told under no circumstances to give a newborn water by my ped until 6 mos or so. From what my ped told, it can do 2 things....prevent the baby from absorbing necessary nutrients and/or cause water intoxication. when too much water dilutes the sodium in the body, upsetting the electrolyte balance and causing tissues to swell.
Thats just what I was told though.

Yep, the nurse at Winthrop told me she gave my son a little after his circumcision, I don't remember if it was sugar water or sugar on a paci....either way it wasn't a lot and it calmed him right down.

I had to do this for constipation in DD's second week. But honestly, they say not to overfeed babies water because it fills them and prevents them from taking in the formula/bm they need.
You can try it but if you see it interfering with feedings I wouldn't proceed unless DC is thirsty in addition to feedings.

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
The sugar thing is surprising, but one of my best friend's peds told her to start giving her daughter water at 1 week.

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
that seems off to me. I have never heard a baby getting water that early.
Go on AAP.org and see what it says regarding this

this is true, and not even just in small infants.
this happened with my nephew when he was just over a year old and ended up in the hosptial because he was having unexplained seizures. My sister is a pediatric neurologist and was one of the Drs. who treated him. This is exactly what happened, since my nephew doesn't drink milk, he has a dairy allergy (he's 6 now), he was drinking ALOT of water and rice milk which caused an inbalance in his electrolytes which in turn was causing his seizures.

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
thats odd. we were told no water until at least 6 months. and even now at almost 7mo..i give little bits here and there in a sippy cup.
i would ask again. maybe he meant taking bottles of water to make powdered formula so as not to use water from wherever you are going??

right, but I forgot to mention, ped told us to never ever mix water into formula or tea into formula give it between feedings only

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
My Dr. said it's a big no no to give water. He mentioned that our parents etc. might try and push it on us b/c it's something they used to do. I'm not trying to suggest ur ped is wrong- maybe mine is- but I def got opposite advice regarding water.

Re: Drinking water at 7 weeks?
My DS doc ok'd water or chamomile (sp?) after 8wks. But he said NO sugar and of course not to over do it. The sugar on the paci after cercumsized I thought was a distraction from the pain.

Same here. I was actually about to mix formula when ped walked into the office and saw me with a bottle of water and made sure that was NOT what i was going to give DS
